The Gezira Club

As the name suggests, the Gezira Club is a very posh old colonial hotel where British district commissioners sipped pink gins, played tennis and watched the sun go down over the Nile. You can still watch the sun set but any other resemblance has long gone!

Unique Quality: There's a skeleton staff but few services - in theory there's table tennis, TV, guided tours. In reality there's nothing but a room. The swimming pool remains but hasn't been cleaned for years. The rooms are very nice but you'll have to share with plenty of mosquitos and water is not always guaranteed.

But although it's lost its luxurious comfort it remains delightfully charming and its overgrown garden and deserted feel adds to this character. The rooms have balconies (some covered, the best ones open) which give an absolutely stunning view of the Nile, which more than makes up for any of the shortcomings.

Guest teachers at universities in the town are often housed here and you can meet some interesting people. But things have gone missing though so don't leave anything of value lying about. Can't remember how much it costs but it's not expensive, a couple of dollars or so.

The Gezira Club

The Gezira Club sounds very grand, and in Colonial times it probably was. Nowadays it is somewhat run-down, but still offers good accommodation on a budget. The rooms are large, and have functional bathrooms....but bring a padlock if you have anything worth nicking in your luggage....the doors don'ty tend to shut properly! Rooms cost 4000 Sudanese pounds per night, which is just under US$2.

Unique Quality: There is a swimming pool, but you won't find any water in it. There is a bar, but you'll only find soft drinks in it. There is a tennis court, but there is no net and certainly no rackets for hire. There is a billiards table without any balls.....you get the picture! The grounds are nice, as are the views over the Nile, but you ge the feeling that it was once a luxurious place to stay.
