Meroe Tented Camp
View at the Meroë pyramids
The Meroë pyramids are for many visitors the main reason to visit Sudan. Meroë is about 230 km from Khartoum. The site can be easily reached by a highway in three hours. You can manage it in a daytrip, but it is worth to spend the night in Meroë to have more time to see the ancient sites.
The Meroë tented camp is at about 3 km from the pyramids. The view at desert and the pyramids of Royal Necropolis at the background is wonderful. From the camp it is a 30 minutes walk to the pyramids, but you can also go by a camel or your own car.
We stayed for 2 nights in the Meroë Camp. The tents are very spacious and comfortable. I especiallly liked the shady veranda at the front of the tent with 2 chairs. From here the view at the landscape and pyramids is great.
The Camp is open from October to the end of April. The Meroe camp, supervised by an Italian manager, has a well-trained and friendly Sudanese staff. Every day around sunset a free welcome drink with little snacks are served. The last night the staff made a campfire for us in the wadi in front of the restaurant.
Unique Quality: The Meroe Camp has 22 twin-bedded tents of 4 x 4 m. The tenthouses stand at a concrete base and are furnished with two beds, bedside tables, reading lights, drawers and a mirror. In the evening the generator for electricity is on till 10.30pm. Each tent has a private bathroomhut with washbasin, shower and toilet a few meters behind the tenthouse.
The restaurant in ethnic style serves a delicious and varied breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet. It is a mix of Nubian and Italian food.
Directions: The Meroe camp is located in Bagarwyia, about 230 km north of Khartoum. You can reach the camp by unpaved road from the highway directly north of the pyramids. The camp is signposted.
