Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge: out in the plains

We stayed 1 night in this lodge within Serengeti National Park. Apparently its location is perfect - at the heart of the game viewing Seronera circuit.

My guide book comments “...service, food & facilities have long lagged behind those of newer facilities...” but expects a 2008 refurbishment to have dealt with that.

Sorry, no.

The room is very nice, but the bathroom still looks 1970. The service in the bar is dire. A double gin & tonic turned up as 2 gins in separate glasses with 2 bottles of tonic. A bit laughable, but the price - $15 - is more likely to make you cry.

Dinner was a buffet - not of the high quality type, but the mad scramble you’d associate with a very cheap package holiday hotel. The only meat dish (unless you count chile con carne) was spare ribs. Tilapia (looked dry and horrible) was the only alternative. It all smacked of a chef/management with the sole aim of maximising profit, and to hell with the customers.

I didn’t choose the place - it was part of a package (semi-luxury, if you want a joke) put together by the expedition organiser we used for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.

And in case you think I’m hard to please, read my other Arusha hotel reviews.

A hippo seems to have taken up residence for the night outside my window, so that could be fun.

Snake Park: Arusha's best bar and amazing hosts!

Snake Park was founded years ago by Ma and BG. Two incredible loving and caring guys. The camp is a convenient and very decent place. But the best about the campsite is the amazing bar. And the fact that almost all it's profit is going to the Massai clinic which was also founded by Ma and BG. Back in the days it was the only clinic in the whole Massai area which was able to provide anti venum for snake bites. And so you can also visit some pretty big snakes which are supplying the clinic with it's medications for snake bites.

The bar is fitted with a history of it's visitors since twenty years. Great pictures, souvenirs and T-Shirts from all over the world. Try Ma's revenge: a great shot to party!

Muginga Forest Camp: Just great!

After 6 nights under canvas on Mt Kilimanjaro I was apprehensive about anything involving the “camp” word.

However, this place turned out to be wonderful.

We were in individual tents in the grounds, but it was only the sleeping part of the unit which was canvas. It had a thatched roof and the bathroom area was mud & wood. It was delightful - cool and airy at night. I slept like a baby in spite of all the bush noises.

Dinner was a relaxed and good quality buffet. Same with breakfast. After dinner, we sat around the campfire having a laugh until bedtime.

It’s at the north end of Lake Manyara, close to Mto wa Mbu. The entrance to Lake Manyara National Park is close by, and the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about an hour away.

Gee, where to start?

Location; facilities; atmosphere; service

Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge: wow location

We stayed a night here between the Serengeti & Ngorongoro sectors of our safari. We arrived at about 5pm and left the next morning at 6 - not much time to form an opinion.

The setting is spectacular - carved out of the rock on the crater rim, and looking out over the crater.

It was like a clone of the Serengeti place we’d used the nigh before, apart from the views. Same 1970s features (public areas and in my room) - well maintained but looking very dated and tired. Some upgrading done in the bathroom, but not nearly enough.

Same 3rd rate buffet for dinner - and I mean “the same” - apart from a beef dish, the menu seemed to be identical right down to the ultra cheap spare ribs. I really struggled to find a main course I wanted to eat. The salads were good, however.

The staff seemed a bit more professional and helpful, to be fair.

Can't help with prices, as it was part of the safari package we bought.

Masai Camp: Masai Camp

The Masai Camp is a camping ground with a bar area for evening entertainment. There is a restaurant with pizza and burgers, pools tables and TV.

The grounds have security of sorts though you'll want to keep your items close at hand. The grounds have 2 shower blocks - one built onto the bar area and the other within the camping area. There is plenty of space to set up tents and your own cooking facilities.

There is some sort of entertainment on most nights and it's rather loud so don't forget to have ear plugs just in case.

Mount Meru Hotel: Lovely

The recommendation of friends who've been here. It used to be a Novotel, and a Holiday Inn (I think). It has been completely renovated and re-opened in October 2010.

The interior designer certainly gets the thumbs up from me, and does the landscape architect. Cool & stylish with a slightly minimalist feel.

My room faces north, so I have this amazing view of Mt Meru.

The staff seem efficient and friendly. Breakfast today was great - including mango & banana which (having seen the fields as we drove in from the airport) just have to be local.

I'll be here on and off over the next 2 weeks - in between a trips up Kilimanjaro and on safari - so this may get updated.

The views... and the mango.

Arusha Tourist Inn: Arusha Tourist Inn

Arusha Tourist Inn was $60 per night for a double.

Rooms very clean with a small TV. Warm showers.

Breakfast is basic but nice and the small selection of food in the restaraunt is tasty and substancial.

They won't take cards or travellers cheques though, and despite emailing to confirm, there was no room available when we arrived so we had to move next door to the awful Meru Hotel until the room became free the next day.

L'Oasis Lodge: A little heaven after dusty days in the bushes

L'Oasis Lodge is a lovely place to shake the dust off after long game drives in national parks of the northern safari circuit. Rooms are very comfortable to put yourself together after sitting in that land rover for a bit too long.

Lodge provides everything you might need so you can truly unwind for a day or two. It was rather empty during my stay and I had lots of space and privacy - I had to share the well kept gardens with birds only.

There's also a (smallish) swimming pool, internet cafe and curio shop, but I haven't used any of them.

The lodge was part of a safari package, so I'm not sure about the rates.

I enjoyed the restaurant - an english cook was taking care of the great food (half-pint of shrimps, hooray!) when I was there.

The lounge is very lovely with great snacks available from the restaurant (check the photo of the menu).

Snake Park: Snake Park Camp Ground

Nice campground outside of town. Flush toilets and showers(sometime even get hot water) Nice lady owns the place. Popular with groups and tours. Good food and a great open air bar. Dozens of native snakes on display in their zoo area. Tons of power strips in the office to charge up your electronics.

They have a garage to fix vehicles. Oh yeah and A SNAKE PARK! Also a Masai museum.
