 | Tanzania Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 130 | | Well, I really didn't have any other accomodation option whilst on safari due to financial constraints. But I did stay at a lodge apart from camping and I would honestly choose camping next time round even if I could afford the lodges!
Eating in the open air, gazing at the blanket of silver stars and hearing the noises of the bush at night make camping in the African bush a most memorable experience! Leave a Comment Theme: Campground

This was my first camping experience during my African holiday. Actually I was pretty surprised as this looked like the Scotland campgrounds I had stayed at, with all the amenities! Still I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting something wilder! What I really shouln't have been disappointed about though are the toilets - nice real ceramic toilets you can sit on! What a difference from the other pit style toilets I had to contend with for the rest of the week! I never dreamt that a toilet that can be flushed, without smells, and without seeing a week's worth of other human waste was so important!
Nice trimmed lawn, a pool, a bar (with cold foreign and local beer) and clean toilets and showers with hot and cold water, lights during the early parts of the night to see where you are walking ... what more could you ask for? This is what I call the true African bush experience. This campsite is located within the Serengeti park. Don't expect a safe fenced area! Animals are free to roam in and out and in between the camps - and they do! Giraffes, elephants, hyenas were amongs the visitors I experienced in the campsite. And what can beat sleeping to the natural sounds of the bush, with the occasional roaring lion?
Right in the middle of one of the most famous and incredible parks in the world! In close contact with the animals and birds. Leave a Comment Theme: Campground

This is a nice hotel, built in a modern but rustic style. The hotel boasts 4 restaurants (Indian, Italian, Chinese and Local & Continental), a swimming pool, conference facilities, and provides services such as foreign exchange, a tour operator etc. Rooms are quite spacious and comfortable - with colour TV. Some of the rooms overlook Mt. Meru, but I think they are more expensive than the others. Each room has a few African decor stuff - masks, paintings etc. In one of the rooms we even had a wooden tribal man dispensing the toilet paper (firmly glued to the ground ....) The bathrooms were quite nice as well. What I would really recommend, even if you are not staying at this hotel is its Indian restaurant. The food was simply delicious - I have never tasted such good Indian food in my entire life! And it is cheap!
A great hotel to chill out before and after a safari, in a rustic African atmosphere. Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: Situated within Arusha

What a wonderful experience - the lodge, like the other lodges at Ngorongoro is exactly on the rim of the crater with incredible views over the crater. The windows are ultra large to let you gape at the scenery - I could have spend hours simply taking in the view. The atmosphere is a cosy one ... and the food in the restaurant was good.
The view over the Ngorongoro crater and the local entertainment of Tanzanian acrobats in the evening. Leave a Comment Theme: Campground

We arrived a day late in Mpika due to nick's car breaking down every time we stopped somewhere, Only to find Mpika was far from expected and most certainly not safe for a camp over. Having covered some 480km already we made coffee at a gas station and debated the next step, we would move on to Tunduma another 370km away, No luck Tunduma also offered little in security for our group (3 children and 1 of those a cerebral palsy) so we pushed on Toward Iringa another 500km away. Then we found it 51km South west of Iringa, my spot's light up a sign on the road CAMPING SITE, we pulled in and smashed a camp together in the pouring raingot the children washed, feed and into bed. Then the security Gaurd came over and bade us "welcome" it was the very early hours of the morning and we three guy's were exhausted "don't suppose you have a bar" I enquired heartily, "yes we do, would sir like a beer".
The facilities were beyond compromise, this family owned and run Guest House and camp site offered everything, clean, hot water, perfect camp site, Bar, farm shop, And a splended host, Nicola Cox, Attractive and very well presented, Nicola runs a very fine business, is caring and helpful, Leave a Comment Theme: CampgroundPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Box 113, Iringa Tanzania.Directions: 51km South West of Iringa and 21 Km North East of Mafinga adjacent to the Dar es Salam - Mbeya Road.Other Contact: kisolanza@cats-net.com

After an incredible taxiride along bushpaths around Arusha of more than two hour, we found rooms in this lovely hotel. Due to an international meeting all the main roads in Arusha were blocked. We had to change taxis because of technical troubles, we run out of gasoline in the absolutely dark in the middle of nowhere between the bananatrees and back in town most hotels were full. We were so happy, that Javet our Tanzanian driver of our truck accompanied us during all those adventures in the taxi. At 11 pm finally we had the keys of our rooms and were sitting in the lovely garden of the hotel, listening to African life music, drinking beer, fruit juice and eating a delicious pizza.
The hotel and restaurant is managed by an older Italian lady. The garden is lovely and the Italian restaurant is great. During the weekend many Tanzanian families came to the garden eating pizzas or just for a drink. Every evening there was life music, but we saw also acrobatics for the kids. After having stayed in the African Safari Club Hotel at Mombasa, I expected the lodges in Tanzania (on the safari "Best of Tanzania") to be better tents or huts. I was pretty surprised to see the "Luxus-Lodges" in these parks. Hot water, heated (where necessary), 5 star restaurant, view Tarangire Sopa Lodge: Located somewhere in the middle of the Park. A very luxurious Lodge with a Pool, big and clean rooms, a superb restaurant ...
at the morning there are buffalos grazing in front of your bungalow-room. The pool is only open at day, because there are lions there at night and there?s a path where a lot of baboons are walking through to the waterhole. The first night in Tanzania we stayed near Lake Manyara. At the escarpment near the lake Manyara is a nice tented camp with comfortable tent houses. There are shared showers and toilets. In a huge central tent they served us a nice meal.
The tent houses stand rather solitary in a rather bare surreal landscape. It gave us a special feeling, but also a lot of fun. In the Serengeti NP we camped at the campsite no.1 near Seronera Lodge. For departure from the Netherlands I had heard the following story about what happened the year before. There were problems with 9 lions, who didnīt want leave the camp in the early morning. Some lions started even to lick at the ropes of the tents. One of the drivers had the chance to reach the landrover and moved the lions away with his car, so everybody could leave the tent safely at the end. In the Netherlands they confirmed me we should not visit those place again. Surprise ....at the campfire I heard the story again and the saem driver told us, that this was that campsite!! And the problem..people had some small sausages in their tent. We didn't have sausages, but also not a very relaxed night.
