Stuart on our veranda! by SalsaNikki Kirurumu was a real experience. Our accomodation was a twin bedded tent, with toilet, shower and washbasin, and it had the most fabulous view from a hill down to to Lake Manyara. The sunrise from here was amazing. The food at the camp is worth of mention, which was excellent, as were the staff - you can do a nature walk here, led by a Masai Warrior - we did plan to do this, but I fell asleep! Only complaint was that the mossie nets over 1 of the beds was too short - but when you're in the middle of nowhere you can't complain about that!

A Tropical Setting by Bwana_Brown When the large group of Canadian volunteers (110 of us) first landed in Tanzania, we were put up in these quite pleasant accommodations in Dar es Salaam. I am not too sure of the exact location because my head was spinning with all of the travel and activities at the time!
It was strange sleeping under mosquito nets for the first time in my life! Theme: OtherAddress: Dar es Salaam

On our first night in Tanzania we stayed in a cottage at this lodge, which despite its rustic appearance is in a quiet suburb of Arusha. Our room was in one of the “Masai boma” traditional thatched cottages and was simple but with en suite facilities, and nicely decorated with local crafts and wall paintings. We arrived quite late in the evening and were pleased to find the restaurant still open, where we enjoyed a light meal of tempura vegetables with a spicy dip and a cold beer each – a nice welcome to Africa.
The well-maintained grounds are home to a number of exotic birds, including crowned cranes (see photo 3), flamingos, spoonbills and herons. I see from the website that since our visit they have added an annexe called “Backpackers Paradise” with 12 twin rooms sharing communal bathroom facilities. I imagine that this would be well worth checking out if you’re travelling on a budget. Another addition is the cyber café – there were no internet facilities when we were there. Although it is now ten years since we were there, there are recent good reviews for this hotel on Trip Advisor so I have no qualms about recommending it.

Here’s a brief summary of the other great places we stayed in Tanzania – for more detail please see the individual pages which I’ve linked to. Ngorongoro Serena Hotel This was the most luxurious of the places we stayed in Tanzania. It has the most stunning of settings, perched on the crater’s edge with views from all public rooms and bedrooms. And its clever design means that viewed from below it almost disappears into the landscape. At its heart is a large lobby bar with a huge window to make the most of that view, and opening from this is the restaurant where we had a couple of excellent dinners and equally good buffet breakfasts. Our room was very comfortable, with a balcony which shared the same amazing view of the crater. Read on … Tarangire Safari Lodge If you’re looking for a “tent with a view” this could be the place for you. It’s a tented camp perched on an escarpment with fantastic views. The tents are strung out along the bluff, and at the heart of the complex is an open-air dining room and bar area, with a terrace overlooking the park below. And staying here doesn’t mean roughing it – these “tents” are fixed, and are more like a room with canvas walls than real tents. They have a solid base, a thatched roof, screened windows and an en-suite stone-walled bathroom. Read on … Dhow Palace Hotel, Stone Town, Zanzibar We spent five nights at the Dhow Palace Hotel in the centre of old Stone Town, a converted 1870s Omani mansion with a very authentic Zanzibari/African feel. Internal balconies on each floor look down on to the central courtyard, and traditional furniture provides comfortable places to sit in a number of lobby areas. Our room was large, and it too was furnished with traditional beds and other pieces. We especially liked the rooftop restaurant where breakfast was served each day – fresh mango and pineapple and a great view of Stone Town was an excellent way to start the day! Read on … Breezes Beach Club, Zanzibar This was our other “let’s splash out a little” stay of this trip! And although we have stayed in a couple of similar resort-style hotels elsewhere since, this one remains our favourite and our benchmark for such places. Although large compared with the places we normally stay it has the comfortable feel of a smaller hotel, perhaps because the rooms are so well-spaced around the grounds. We loved the open airy feel to the public areas, especially the bar, and our beautiful large room decorated with light fabrics, dark wood and a few local crafts pieces, and on our terrace a hammock and view across the gardens to the sea. At the bar by SirRichard During the safari we arranged in Arusha, we slept in tents. Most of the days we went to campgrounds as this. Here you'll find very basic commodities, bar, WC and maybe showers, but the main purpose of these campgrounds is to keep the animals away. If you do wild camping, some animals can wander around the tents looking for food and this is quite... uncomfortable! Theme: CampgroundComparison: least expensiveAddress: Lake Manyara National Park

at the Main Gate by SirRichard As we arrived in Arusha we found this medium class hotel, clean but very basic. It's quite well located, though Arusha is just a few streets! In the back they have a quiet garden with views to the river. Theme: HotelComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Boma Road, Arusha, TanzaniaPhone: +255 (0) 573 127

View from the restaurant by Myndo Serengeti Sopa Lodge: Located on a small hill in the serengeti, so you have a nice overview over the landscape. With binoculars you can continue your wild-watching in the evening. Very good restaurant included..
That hill may not be high, but the drive up can be murderous for some vehicles. Ours only managed it after a decent run-up. On the picture you see the view from the Restaurant. We really liked it. Theme: Hotel

Pool with a view, Lake Manyara by Myndo Lake Manyara Lodge: Not actually in the National Park, but outside and up: on the rim of the "mountain"-peak next to it. This Lodge is not as luxurious equipped as the others we were in (it is also not a Sopa Lodge) , and the food is more simple made, but the swimmingpool is worth trying.. and you can look all over the land from it
The view over the land beneath is magnificient. Often you can see whole flocks of birds circling in the air over the Lake. The way up to the lodge is very steep. Not good for old cars and such- Theme: Hotel

Ngorongoro, Sopa Lodge by Myndo Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge: As the other Lodges in this park, this one is situated on the rim of the crater, which means it is over 2600m high. So in the evening it can get pretty cold, but the rooms are heated. At least there wont be any mosquitos here.
The view in the crater is spectacular and with the very big windows in each bungalow room you can also enjoy it. Of course there is also a pool, but as the manager himself says, there is never anyone in it -because it,s too cold in the evening and during the day all are in the crater. Well appointed rooms with a lovely rustic feel, situated in 2 storey 'huts'. We found our ground floor room a bit dark, but that wasn't really a problem.
This lodge is located on the hillside overlooking Lake Manyara (as its name suggests). The Lake is inhabited by what looks to be hundreds of flamingoes. From a distance this gives areas of the lake a bright pink hue. You will need binoculars (or a zoom lense) to see any detail. Theme: Hotel
