Rhino Lodge: The Cheaper Lodge Option

by hayward68

Rhino Lodge is located by the Ngorongoro Crater, a must on the safari itinerary if in Tanzania. If you'd rather not camp on the crater rim, it can get cold and damp, but can't afford the more expensive lodges, then this lodge is a good alternative.
It's located across the road from the rim so you don't get the views down to the crater but at night you're not going to see anything anyways.
We'd just finished camping in the Serengeti and the thought of being warm and dry in a lodge with our own bathroom was uppermost in our minds. We got a triple bed room, only needed two beds, and it was simple and clean, warm and comfortable. The rooms have balconies which overlook the grounds. There are some lovely views of the surrounding countryside.
The hot water in the bathroom is shut off for part of the day so that's the only inconvenience but you just have your shower later.
Our room cost us $160US for the two of us, so $80 each and this included dinner and breakfast. It costs more to have a lunch included but our guide and cook provided those for us.
The meals are served in a large dining room with balconies running along two sides, a great place to sit and wait with a drink from the bar before dinner is ready. There's also a few couches in front of a log fire that is wonderful when it's cold and/or damp outside. The altitude of the crater rim means it gets foggy and cold at night, at least, it did in February.
Meals are served buffet style and are fairly basic but filling, unless you're really picky you shouldn't have a problem.
There are notices in the room to be aware when leaving your room as wild animals do wander through the property on occasion. So peek out your door to make sure a buffalo or a lion hasn't taken up residence on your doorstep.
It's not a huge lodge, only 24 rooms but I highly recommend it.

The couches in the front of the fireplace are a great place to sit and chat with other guests at the lodge. We met a lovely family who were on holiday from England.
Note there is another fireplace in a lounge near the front reception.

It is located in the heart of city, old and expensive. I dont recommend this hotel.

City Novelty Hotel: Dar Es Salaam Overnighter

by Acirfa

I used this hotel for a night when I arrived in Dar and again before taking a flight back to Europe. A clean hotel that cost approximately £17 per night with breakfast included.

Rooms are suitable for an overnight stay although on the last night there, the attic room was infested with mosquitos and by morning it looked like a war had broken out n the blood spattered bed.
I believe this was an exception and because it was the attic room that is not used as much (benefit of the doubt situ), they do spray the rooms although there are no mosquito nets.

I would certainly use this hotel again for any short stops.

Masai Camp: Banda's on a Budget

by Acirfa

Pitch your own tent, hire a tent or banda (traditional Masai tent) or even park up your caravan. This site is just a short 3K from Arusha town centre, it has hot running water, bar and restaurant with it's fabulous pizza's being the favourite bite to eat.

Plenty of events happening over the year with parties for each traditional time of the year celebrated.

Book your safari's with Tropical Trails at the camp and enjoy the great social atmosphere of the camp.

Pool, darts and table football

Karama Lodge (Blessings, God's Gifts): 'Something to Share'

by Acirfa

A beautiful Lodge, cleverly situated and well camouflaged into the hillside on the Suye Hill, on the outskirts of Arusha.
Naturally furnished with local timbers and artifacts, it is a comfortable and eco friendly lodge that addresses your every need.

Breakfast can be taken overlooking the lovely gardens and you can even watch the cows that produced your morning milk stroll through the grounds.

Bush babies cry in the night whilst during the day there are stunning views of Mnt. Meru and Kilimanjaro, both can be seen from your chalet and the lounge area where a bar is open all day and evening.

Buzzards sweep before your very eyes into the crater area of the lodge and the flora is equally as breathtaking as the fauna.

Staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming.

This makes a perfect place to take a break after a long flight, perhaps before hiking up Kilimanjaro or indeed after making the climb. Treks up the mountain can be booked through the Lodge as can safaris to Game Parks.

For those interested in Ornothology, there is a long list of birds to twitter about here at Karama

Laundry and email facilites available.

Karama is in fact a short stroll from Arusha town but I believe transport can be arranged through the lodge and a taxi is cheap to take too.

Moyo Mmoja Guest hose: Bagamoyos best guest house

by Marenmaren

Moyo Mmoja Guesthouse is the best place to stay while in Bagamoyo! The atmosphere is great, and that is definetly the best part of Mojo Mmoja. One feels at home there, and there are always Tanzanians hanging around the place welcoming you to share their food, their culture and their lives with you. I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

...: Other places we stayed

by toonsarah

Here’s a brief summary of the other great places we stayed in Tanzania – for more detail please see the individual pages which I’ve linked to.

Ngorongoro Serena Hotel
This was the most luxurious of the places we stayed in Tanzania. It has the most stunning of settings, perched on the crater’s edge with views from all public rooms and bedrooms. And its clever design means that viewed from below it almost disappears into the landscape. At its heart is a large lobby bar with a huge window to make the most of that view, and opening from this is the restaurant where we had a couple of excellent dinners and equally good buffet breakfasts. Our room was very comfortable, with a balcony which shared the same amazing view of the crater. Read on …

Tarangire Safari Lodge
If you’re looking for a “tent with a view” this could be the place for you. It’s a tented camp perched on an escarpment with fantastic views. The tents are strung out along the bluff, and at the heart of the complex is an open-air dining room and bar area, with a terrace overlooking the park below. And staying here doesn’t mean roughing it – these “tents” are fixed, and are more like a room with canvas walls than real tents. They have a solid base, a thatched roof, screened windows and an en-suite stone-walled bathroom. Read on …

Dhow Palace Hotel, Stone Town, Zanzibar
We spent five nights at the Dhow Palace Hotel in the centre of old Stone Town, a converted 1870s Omani mansion with a very authentic Zanzibari/African feel. Internal balconies on each floor look down on to the central courtyard, and traditional furniture provides comfortable places to sit in a number of lobby areas. Our room was large, and it too was furnished with traditional beds and other pieces. We especially liked the rooftop restaurant where breakfast was served each day – fresh mango and pineapple and a great view of Stone Town was an excellent way to start the day! Read on …

Breezes Beach Club, Zanzibar
This was our other “let’s splash out a little” stay of this trip! And although we have stayed in a couple of similar resort-style hotels elsewhere since, this one remains our favourite and our benchmark for such places. Although large compared with the places we normally stay it has the comfortable feel of a smaller hotel, perhaps because the rooms are so well-spaced around the grounds. We loved the open airy feel to the public areas, especially the bar, and our beautiful large room decorated with light fabrics, dark wood and a few local crafts pieces, and on our terrace a hammock and view across the gardens to the sea. L’Oasis Hotel, Arusha: Welcome to Tanzania

by toonsarah

On our first night in Tanzania we stayed in a cottage at this lodge, which despite its rustic appearance is in a quiet suburb of Arusha. Our room was in one of the “Masai boma” traditional thatched cottages and was simple but with en suite facilities, and nicely decorated with local crafts and wall paintings.

We arrived quite late in the evening and were pleased to find the restaurant still open, where we enjoyed a light meal of tempura vegetables with a spicy dip and a cold beer each – a nice welcome to Africa.

The well-maintained grounds are home to a number of exotic birds, including crowned cranes (see photo 3), flamingos, spoonbills and herons.

I see from the website that since our visit they have added an annexe called “Backpackers Paradise” with 12 twin rooms sharing communal bathroom facilities. I imagine that this would be well worth checking out if you’re travelling on a budget. Another addition is the cyber café – there were no internet facilities when we were there.

Although it is now ten years since we were there, there are recent good reviews for this hotel on Trip Advisor so I have no qualms about recommending it.

Tembo Hotel: Zznzibar harbour front hotel

by maggiethomas

We stayed in the Tembo Hotel in Stonetown and liked it alot. It faces the harbour but it is not a swimming beach. A little further along is the Serena Hotel....more expensive but very nice indeed. For swimming beaches try the East coast of Zanzibar island. Karafu is nice and we stayed at the Sunrise guest house which also has a small swimming pool. This is great because the tides in Zanzibar are very extreme. Just along the beach was Breezes, again more expensive but very nice. Have a look at www.zanzibar.net

Enjoy, I love the island...more properly called Unguja.
