baby elephant, mikumi NP by littlebush Cant remember the name of the campsite but just outside the national park is a bushcamp site with basically a shelter and some 'bush' toilets, which are fine but bloody smelly! the owner will provide wood for a fire. There are leopards and lions known ro roam around near the site so best hold that dump in for an extra few hours until day light! Theme: CampgroundComparison: least expensive

The small pool of Mikumi Wildlife Lodge by Veghel Mikumi Wildlife Lodge has a small swimming pool and a sundeck area. The sundeck area is equipped with comfortable beds, free of charge obviously. Part of the area enjoys the shadow of trees. The pool area would be an ideal place to relax for a few hours if you stay more than one night.

My wife and I stayed in Mikumi Wildlife Lodge for one night. The camp is overlooking the Kikoboga plains, the Uluguru mountains and the Rubeho mountains. We got cottage no 1, which is close to the reception area. On various occasions, my familiy-in-law (expatriots in Tanzania) stayed in other cottages of Mikumi Wildlife Camp. Though they all look the same from the outside, the size and lay-out vary considerably. The cottages are built from stones with thatched roofs. All cottages have private facilities. The beds are equipped with mosquito nets. Every cottage has its own veranda, with great views on the surroundings. The camp has a bar, a restaurant, a swimming pool and a souvenis shop. Besides, there is a comfortable place for your driver to stay (I didn't see it, but our driver was enthousiastic about it). Reservations are to be made at the Oyster Bay Hotel in Dar es Salaam. The mail address of the Oyster Bay Hotel is P.O. Box 2261, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The hotel's telephone number is +255.22.2600352/4. The fax number is +255.22.2600347. Both the bar and restaurant enjoy great views on the plains of the reserve. In front of the bar, an open fire is lit at sunset. The comfortable chairs are an ideal place to enjoy the beautiful African sunset. Wherever you are around sunset, make sure you are somewhere outside, as it is a shame if you miss it! The restaurant has a circular shape with two floors. The outer floor (ring) is about 1 m above ground level, the inner floor about 2 m above ground level. The restaurant enjoys a beautiful view on one of the man-made water holes (at a distance of 50 m), so you may see game during dinner. The quality of the food is high considering the location, though it is obviously not 'haute cuisine'. The restaurant and bar are open to visitors who don't stay overnight. The personnel is very friendly and helpful.

Cottages are made from local materials. They are basic and comfortable at the same time. From your bed, you look over the plains of the park. Especially in the evening and at night, big game usually comes very close to the cottages. You can hear lions groaming and elephants trumpeting. They are very nearby: a great experience when you are lying safely in your bed! Bathrooms have a toilet, a shower and a basin. They have not been finished properly according to Western standards. But don't bother: you're in the middle of a game reserve in one of the poorest countries on earth, so constructing this is already a big achievement!
