Never done this route but have seen buses parked up in Mwembe Tayari in Mombasa ready to go to Moshi that do the Mombasa, Voi, Taveta, Moshi trip. I'm pretty sure they were running daily. Sorry no idea of price.

Many thanks for your reply, but i think goes like a triangle departing Nariobi.....Mombasa....Voi....Moshi...etc. I'll be going from Moshi to Mombasa, and it's going to be a long journey via Nariobi. Never mind part of the adventure!

Even if you can't do it on one bus going all the way there will definately be buses or more likely matatus going to the border a short distance away from Moshi or even a bit further to the town of Taveta just over the border. From there there are defiantely buses and matatus going to Mombasa. If you are not in Taveta in time to catch the morning Mombasa bus you could go as far as Voi where there is a constant stream of transport going to the coast.

You could also stop at the lovely town of Wundanyi just off the road from Taveta to Voi. Wundanyi is one of my favourite places in Kenya; lovely walking, nice people and even a great little boozer. You can even meet some of the local's ancestors.

There are several bus companies operating this route Mombasa-Moshi via Taveta border.
The most and highly recommended bus company is Tahameed bus company.
Their offices are found at MwembeTayari,Moshi and Arusha as well.
For your information you will be requared to Book with Tahameed office in Moshi they have an affiliate booking office in Moshi where by all Tahameed buses will have a stop over at the stage and let those going to Mombasa to get in.
They usual charge 800KENYA SHILLINGS Moshi to Mombasa equivalent to 11.5$
Good luck

I took the Raqib bus from Moshi to Mombasa in Feb 2009. It cost 13000 TZS and departed from Moshi at 8:30am arriving in Mombasa after 4pm. They pick up a lot of people along the way and the stop at the border can take awhile if they decide to search luggage, mine had a cursory search. After passing the border they stopped at Taveta for about an hour, you can find snacks and, I assume, toilet facilities. I didn't get off the bus as I was tired of all the touts bothering me.
The trip is very dusty, you'll be filthy by the time you reach Mombasa so pack some wet wipes. We actually took longer than it should have as we picked up some extra passengers from a bus that had broken down along the way.
This bus does not depart from the main bus station in Moshi, but from another place further south of Chagga St. Here's a phone number in Moshi tel: 255-754-839613

My taxi driver had no idea where the stop is, so you might have to get someone who knows where it is, my guide picked up my ticket the day before my departure.

Travel Tips for Moshi

Middle of Town

by fishandchips

In the middle of town you will find a large directions tree with the direction and distance to many places. One of these is Kibo Hut which I had left 2 days earlier! The directions tree is located in the large round-about in the centre of Moshi.

Married Life in the Village

by Geisha_Girl

This article came in the Tanzania Sunday News on May 15, 2005. I thought this was quite an interesting take on the local customs:

"OLD Zanaki men have a unique way of dealing with unfaithful wives: they sing at the top of their voices each time they approach home and in this way scare away any man who does not have a convincing reason to explain his presence.

That special song is called kibanziko in the Zanaki language and every old man reaches a particular age and gets down to composing his kibanziko. The song is a notice for unwanted guests to leave, a warning for men whose intentions are not honourable. It is assumed that when an old man sings his kibanziko he is usually drunk, and it is sung only after dark.

No self-respecting elder of the Zanaki tribe will be caught sneaking upon his wife trying to catch her in the act of committing adultery. It is a behaviour that is frowned upon."

So all you Players in the house can learn from these Zanaki men! If you hear homeboy humming to the tune of "Mack the Knife,"............ head for the back door!!!

Colobus Monkeys on Kili's lower slopes

by jackfruit

It is possible to do a half day hike in the rainforests on Kili's base. Colobus monkeys are plentiful here. If you are lucky, you will see them leaping from tree to tree in the forest's upper canopy.

Most hotels can arrange a walking tour into the forests for as little as $15 including the services of a english speaking guide.

At the Base of Kilimanjaro

by hayward68

"Trekking Central"

Moshi is a town with a population of approximately 150, 000 and is the best place to base yourself if preparing for a climb of Kilimanjaro.
It's in the middle of a major coffee growing area and has the wonderful advantage of the amazing view of Mt Kilimanjaro. The mountain is usually covered in a layer of clouds but early in the morning and around dusk the clouds will disappear and the imposing sight of Kilimanjaro appears.
