Verani Beach Hotel: Pemba - Verani Beach Hotel - Visit at your peril!

I booked to stay one week here in Feb 2011, I paid a deposit in advance, and the balance in USD on arrival for 7 nights full board. I soon realised that there was no running water in my room, so was unable to shower or flush the toilet, however I was told that this was a temporary issue that would soon be resolved.
The staff topped up my shower water tank, on investigating where this came from I realised that it was standing water that was taken from a tank used to water the local cattle.
At the end of the second day I informed the staff that if the water was not connected on the third day I would have to leave.
On the third morning, as I still had no water connected, I left after breakfast. I was informed that they could not give me a refund and I should contact the owner Khamis Said Makame on my return to the uk.
HAVING MADE MANY PROMISES TO REFUND MY MONEY - I AM STILL WAITING, OVER 12 MONTHS LATER - DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN

YOU BOOK AT YOUR PERIL - THIS IS A VERY REMOTE LOCATION WITH NO LOCAL VILLAGE OR SHOPS. I HAD TO LEAVE ON FOOT.

Pemba Clove Inn: Pemba's newest addition

We didn't stay here but did visit for meals and it looks very nice as it is a new hotel. Apparently with no website yet so it may be hard to find online. The manager told us they opened in June 06 and usual price for a double is $90 but they do offer deals if you ask and he offered us a double room at $50. Unfortunately we were already booked and paid at the Pemba Island Hotel which was satisfactory with small clean rooms with nets, Sat TV, air con., fan and fridge at $40 per double room.

Le Tavern: Small and basic, but central

Being off season, and our trip being one that came up with little time to plan, we were booked at this hotel by our contact in Zanzibar.
Pretty basic accomodation, but clean. The location was very central, at Chake Chake, which is also the islands administrative centre...
That being said, its not really a big island though to get around...
