We had a week there in June 2005. It is a lovely place, with 13 bungalows right on the beach, with a restaurant/bar/lounge area behind it. The rooms are basic but very nice, with big comfortable beds and a decent shower room. The only drawback to the rooms is lack of air-conditioning which would be an absolute must in the hot seasons. Each of the room does have a large ceiling fan which is really effective, however, once the electricity is turned off on the complex at about midnight it does warm up again. The food in the restaurant is superb. Lots of fresh fruit and sea food, and the staff are really friendly and efficient. The beach is beautifully clean and has a Masai as security even though during the time we were there we didn't see anyone other than guests at the hotel, or fishermen at sea, or women harvesting sea weed. The sea is crystal clear and really warm. I'd recommend the Pongwe Beach is you want somewhere lovely to go to, but just to relax and not do a lot. on a hammock in front of a bungalow by call_me_rhia We spent only a day at the pongwe beach hotel, but we didn't stop overnight, so I can't comment about the bulgalows. They seemed very nice with their makuti huts. Each cottage has a seaview and a private terrace.
The manager boasted about traditional beds and zanzibar doors to the bungalows... at 70 dollars a night per person (including breakfast), it seemed slightly too overpriced for my taste. because it's located in the middle of nowhere, you must have your meals there and book their excursions - all of which are overpriced. The garden is lovely, though - and there are very few people... I would call it a perfect place for a romantic weekend or for a honeymoon. Absolutely recommend Pongwe Beach Hotel. It's as good as the pics on their website, if not better. Pongwe is paradise. Great location, friendly staff, good food. Ok, the sea goes out but that doesn't matter as you can go out and explore. Accommodation is comfortable and the sea breeze keeps you cool at night. If you get a chance there's Pongwe school which is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. A good time to go is between 10 and 10.30 as that's when the children are on a break. Make sure you see the Headmaster as he likes to meet everyone who visits the school. He's asked for the following: geometry sets, chalk (coloured & white), swahili / english dictionary, calculators. The children are always keen to have pens too. Currently there are 117 children attending.
Lovely pool that overlooks the sea. Great food. Friendly staff. Fabulous cocktails. Fantastic place to chill out.
