Ngiri: Ngiri

There are several camp groups inthe Serengeti with Ngiri being the only one I've stayed in. There is plenty of room to pitch tents, a couple of shade areas, water and a shower/toilet block. We were in tents and the flat ground made it easy to get set up.

Security from the animals is limited with bags hung from trees (to make noise in the wind?) there as the only deterrent. During the 2 nights I stayed here we had Water Buffalo nearby and Hyenas that came through the camp late at night plus Baboons after breakfast one day. To stay safe here all food and toothpaste needs to be secured so that the animals cannot smell it. In our case we put all of these items on our truck.

The showers are a good inclusion with the large black tank getting heated up by the sun during the day. Nice after a long day of game drives! The toilets are flushing squat types so you need good thigh strength! There is also an area to wash your clothes and with the days getting up to 35C (in the 90'sF?) everything dries out fast.

Being in the midst of wold animals you'll get lots of animal noises especially at night which adds to the whole experience.

Serena Lodge: An African Experience at its Finest

Serena Lodge
http://www.serenahotels.com/tanzania/serengeti/home.asp

The Serena Lodge is even more beautiful and luxiorious than we imangined.A wonderful bar off the lobby with lots of leather and wood , its first class all the way. We are met at the entrance with trays of hot damp towels and cool exotic drinks. Rooms are arranged in round chalets with thatched roofs ( Maasai style) Our room had a king sized bed and overlooked the Serengeti . We are escorted to and from dinner by armed security since there are no barriers between us and the wildlife. Dinner was wonderful , lamb skewers, grilled pork chops tons of fresh bread…desserts. Oh my, not easy to stick to my diet. After dinner we enjoyed a traditional show with lively music and dancing .

Olduvai Camp: Wonderful Tented Lodge

This is a wonderful place to stay if you would like to interact with the Masaii. The camp is clean and the service is great. It is a permanent tent camp with basically an out door bathroom that is attached to your large tent. I would call it camping, but at the highest level possible.

An opportunity to truly interact with the Masaii is quite unique, since the only other way you will be able to is to visit a village, which is a bit contrived. It is also near to the Olduvai Gorge, where they first discovered early signs of man.

Ndutu Lodge: How the migration works

This is a general tip - before you come to the Serengeti, or even book a trip - take some time to really understand the migration's movements.

The Ndutu area is meant to be amazing in Nov-March ... I wouldn't know, I got there in September. Then it was bare and desolate - not at all what I'd expected. The game was amazingly sparse on the plains - which restricted us to viewing around the Lake Ndutu - which was OK. But overall, it was very disappointing.

So before anyone goes to the Serengeti - take some time to understand the migration and how it moves.

Probably the best site I've found on doing this is the moving map and text at: http://www.expertafrica.com/country_info/Tanzania/Serengeti_migration.htm

I wish I'd read this before I booked my trip to the Serengeti!

Camping: National Park Campsite

This is a very basic campsite, it has no facilities to speak of except a long drop toilet, no showers - take plenty of wet wipes and prepare to be smelly for a few days! LOL...

Whats Unique? Well, you are sleeping under the stars amongst the animals of the Serengeti. Its incredibly safe, just dont have any food in your tent.
At night here it gets quite cold, I had a few layers on! We had a big camp fire and ate a dinner of rice and warthog (poor lil warthogs!)
Just fall asleep listening to the animals all around.

Kirawira Tented Camp: Step Back in Time

After enduring a dusty, bumpy 10 hour drive we arrived at dusk and were warmly welcomed by the staff at this luxury campsite. Any place that greets you with warm smiles, a hot towel, and a elegant silver tray filled with champagne, tea, and biscuits deserves a return visit.

Entering into the main Lounge Tent at this campsite you are immediately whisked away into another era. The decor is reminiscent of the Edwardian era with the opulent Persian rugs, leather-bound furniture, and even an antique phonogram in the middle of the room. You wonder if this was how the British Royals lived when they went on Safari. You were certainly treated like royalty every minute of your stay.

Kirawira Camp is set upon a hill with spectacular views of the endless savannah of the Western Serengeti.

The entire campsite has only 25 double tents that accomodate up to 50 people, which makes it quite an exclusive location. Each tent is raised off the ground on a platform and each tent is decorated in a mixture of antique Victorian furniture and East African art.

Every morning you select your 'wake up call' and then are greeted each morning with a polite Hujambo and fresh coffee or tea served in an elegant silver carafe and tray.

In the evenings it is advised that you are escorted by their Security team to your tent. With its location right in the heart of the Serengeti, it is no surprise that the campsite is frequented by all type of Wildlife visitors. Buffalo, gazelles, baboons, and an occasional lion have been sighted by guests as they leave the dining tent to walk back to their tents.

Camp Seronera: Bush camping

Seronera is a well organized camp site in the bush, with a house for cooking and dining. We were alone there, and had a nice, quiet evening. That is, we thought we were alone. The next morning we met our next door neighbours! We were told that lions don't like the smell of humans and avoid us if they can. The wind must have been blowing in the wrong direction that night, then, since a whole family of lions had camped the night just a couple of hundred meters away from us :-)

It is in the midst of it!

THE GRUMETI RIVER LODGE.: THE GRUMETI RIVER LODGE.

Grumeti River Tented Lodge

The Grumeti River Tented Lodge, commonly referred to as Grumeti River Camp, offers fine luxury tented accommodations, excellent hippo viewing and thrilling nocturnal action. With just 10 vibrant and spacious luxury tents, Grumeti River Camp provides for a very intimate, avant-garde and romantic safari experience. This combined with wonderful dinners under the stars and lively nights with grazing hippos and roaring lions creates, in our opinion, one of the finest tented lodges in Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Built into the rim of a dormant volcano, the plant and ivy-covered stone of the lodge blends into the surroundings.

The volcano and surrounding landscape are part of a vast conservation area inhabited by the Maasai tribe. Most guest-rooms have private terraces, which have spectacular views of the crater floor.

Activities include tours of the crater floor, excursions to the nearby Olduvai Gorge, the 'birthplace of mankind', Maasai dancing and choir performances.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge: Serena lodge : always wonderful

The Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge as all the serena hotels is a wonderful place to stay. the rooms are in detached "houses", each room has its own balcony over the plain. And apparently, you can see the migration from the room.
There is a nice pool nd the restaurant and the bar area are very nice as well.
The anecdote : in the evening, as we were the last ones to stay at the bar, the waiter insisted that we had to wait for the security to esocort us to our room, because of the danger (buffalo, lion, we're still not sure !)
