Fascinating Tunis by dwjohnsonla
Tunis sits at the site of what was once the greatest city in the world - Carthage (pronounced kar-TAJ by non-English speakers). Carthage is a beautiful functioning suburb of Tunis with wonderful seaside homes, and, oh, yes, ancient ruins. Tunis is fascinating; it has an old Arab medina at its core, surrounded by a French colonial city reminiscent of New Orleans' French Quarter, surrounded by the modern city. The Bardo Museum in Tunis has the best collection of Roman mosaics in the world. Tunisia also has many fascinating places outside Tunis, including Dougga, the Lezard Rouge, Hammamet, the Cap Bon, Sousse, El Jem, Tozeur, Ksar Ghilane, Matmata, and Djerba. Many parts of the country were used for movies such as The English Patient, Star Wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. This relatively small country may pack the most per square mile of any place in the world. The people are wonderful too, and you can share a louage (taxi) with the locals to just about anywhere.
