Star Wars Hotel
Had we spent the night in Matmata, we would probably have opted for Hotel Sidi Driss. It's a very popular place with travellers given its Star Wars connections, while the guy who runs the place was very friendly and was very happy to let us wander around the hotel. Most of the rooms were dorm rooms so I guess it's more liks a hostel than a hotel. There is a bar and restaurant as well in the adjoining rooms.

underground star wars hotel
basic facilities - the rooms are warm as thats the benefit or advantage of having your housing and living quarters underground - but you have to walk quite a way to and from the bathroom and toilet facilites. doors dont close that well and security to your room is kept with a padlock and chain!
beds are comfortable. and the room is cheap enough at 28 dinar for two including breakfast - but a very basic one of bread and jam and coffee that we had to ask to be reheated - served tepid.
staff are friendly enough but seemed tired dealing with guests.
offered a deal of having evening meal added to bill for only 16 dinar more for two but wasnt worth that - eat out at more interesting restaurant up the road.
Unique Quality: Traditional underground housing and also being one that the filming of Star Wars was involved here.

Sleeping in a cave
A view of our room. It was cold (we were there in February) but comfortable enough. The bathrooms are down a passageway. There are stalls for bathrooms and showers. A robe really would have come in handy! But as I said we were visiting in February, so there weren't many other guests to worry about.
Unique Quality: everthing about this hotel was unique!

Sleep in a cave!
One of the most interesting places I've ever stayed! Traditional Berber dwelling...all the rooms are hollowed out of the earth, and open ito the central "room" that is open to the air. We also had a great meal there and hung out at their bar. This hotel is also where they filmed the scenes of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's house for the movie Star Wars .

May the force be with you
Much of the original film set of Luke Skywalkers (as in Star Wars) house remains - lots of silver archways and things.
Hundreds of day-trippers trapse through in the day, but you can actually stay here.
The rooms are somewhat primitive being a whitewashed cave and a couple of beds - but it will only set you back about 20TD (about $15) with a meal for a unique experience.

The Lars Family Homestead
It's one of the larger underground houses (troglodyte homes) turned into a hotel, There are 145 for 20 rooms and a restaurant and bar. I can't comment on the rooms though, since I just wanted to visit the location.
