Houmt Souk - the caravanserai
by croisbeauty
Caravanserai is old Arabic name for lodging or shelter. It is a littlebit different then the hotels because there is no hall and restaurant in caravanserai. The inneryard of caravanserai has the same construction we can find in the christian cloisters.
Most of the caravanserais on Djerba are turned into the hotels nowadays, offering fascinating and very attractive accomodations. It is pitty that the tourist agents, at least those from Croatia, do not offer this typfe of accomodation which looks extremely attractive and is very cheap.
Take care with scooters and quad bikes
by kritur
Lots of sports on Djerba - horse riding, camel riding, kite surfing, parascending, water skiiing, scooter and quadbiking.
There are a lot of touts around for various sports, check your insurance and theirs before you sign up for anything. Safety standards are not the same as in western europe and you will most likely not be covered by your insurance if you become injured when quad biking etc. The touts are fairly persistent (and can sell in a number of different languages) but just be prepared to say no thanks. Having very small children is a good excuse and if they are really persistent then just say "nous departons aujourd-hui" even if it's a lie!
Some of the beachfront watersports firms are run by german and dutch firms so if you really want to try something it may be safer to go there.

El Ghriba Synagogue
by novsco61
The El Ghriba synagogue bombings in Djerba, Tunisia were the first Al Qaeda attacks outside of Afghanistan after the 9/11 hijackings. In April 2002, at least 19 tourists were killed, mostly Germans.
That's why we were exrayed before entering the synanogue.
An empty oven
by JLBG
This oven had been opened a week earlier and was now empty as all the potteries had been removed. When going into the oven, the ceiling was low and as the walls are very thick to prevent any fast move of the temperature during the cooking process, they were still warm.
