Travel Tips for Ile de Jerba

The landscape

by croisbeauty

Djerba is the biggest island of Tunisia, situated in the southern part of the country. It is connected to the mainland by the narrow isthmus, known eversince the Roman times. The local landscape, very plane, looks more like a desert with sand on the ground and lots of palm-trees.

Drinking Tea

by Wafro

Mint tea is widely drunk in Tunisia. Green tea leaves are boiled in a pot with sugar and mint leaves and the tea is drunk from a glass. This kind of tea is also drunk in Morocco and Algeria. Drinking tea is a part of the Maghreb culture and introduced by tourists.

Obi Won Kenobi's House

by Jasoninlondon

This small building was used as Obi Won's house in the first Star Wars (a new hope) To find it you need to drive towards the ferry to the mainland at Ajim, take the last turnoff to the right and follow the dirt road for about 3km. It will be on your left as you drive.

Rugs are hung between both sides of this side street, close to the market. Their design is typical of Gafsa. They are not knotted as in Kairouan but knitted rugs. On the next photos, you will see more of the design.

The Ghriba synagogue

by cadzand

The El Ghriba Synagogue at Erriadh (also known as Hara Seghira) is one of the holiest Jewish shrines in North Africa.
Several german tourists died here some months ago in an Al Quaida terrorist attack.
The synagogue can be entered by non-Jews, as long as they leave a small gift (money), and the men wear kippahs. The inner sanctuary contains one of the oldest Torahs that is still preserved.
