Djerba map
by Kid-A
You can buy this map for 1 Dinar in practically any shopping area on the island, but I've included it here as well for anyone considering a vacation on Djerba. One side has the tourist zone, and the other has an overall map of the island (and I made that the inset).
You maybe can't read it on VT, but if you copy the image and then zoom in with your own photo viewer, you can probably make out the names of the hotels.
Shisha or Hookah
by Wafro
Shisha is smoked on a social basis, usually in one's home with guests or in a cafe with friends. Most cities have shisha cafes where hookah is offered with a non-alcoholic drink (mainly tea). This is mostly for health reasons rather than cultural reasons. Often people will smoke hookah after dinner as a replacement for cigarettes.
Expect to pay 2-5 dinar
Horse riding
by croisbeauty
Horseriding is very popular in Djerba, especially among the tourists. There are several riding schools in the Zone Touristique of Djerba for those who are inexperied. I've quit of trying to ride the horse after one very experied guy from Slovenia had pretty bad accident. Actually, I saw a nasty wound on his left underknee and that stopped my temptation.
Gossip
by JLBG
But the market is also a place for socializing and a lot of gossip takes place between regular merchants and customers. These two guys, sit by the side of a bunch of dry hot chilies, seem to have a very good time, don't they !
Museum in Guellala - Le musee du patrimoine
by novsco61
The Museum displays various scenes of traditional life through waxwork figures.
It was opened in 2001 and is really worth visiting.
Musée Guellala is historically interesting, especially for children, to see how things were done long, long ago. Several of the pavilions have live demonstrations including a traditional olive oil press using a camel.
There is also a gallery where you can buy really beautiful paintings. You can even get your name written in arabic handwriting. The museum is set in a beautiful garden on the hill. From the minaret you can admire beautiful view of the Guellala village.
