The "Mosquée des Turcs" ((Turks mosque) shows clearly an Ottoman influence with its pencil shaped minaret, very unusual in the Maghreb. This is one of the few minarets of that shape that can be found in the whole Maghreb.

You sunlovers, don't pack too much
Bring or buy the local shoes, your bathpack, a hat, sun lotion, after sun cream and your all set :-) Imodium (or some other diarree-stoppping medicine) A good flash: the sun is always present and using a flashlight; the light balance is easy restored.
Benediction for President Habib Bourguiba
In daily life, Djerbian Jews speak Arab and French but the rituals are done both in Hebrew and in Aramean. If you enlarge this picture, you will read a benediction for the former President Habib Bourguiba, now dead. On the left, it is in French and on the right in Arab.
Tourist Train
Our hotel was located 400 meters away from the beach. The hotel management offered the guests the opportunity to take the tourist train to the beach. While we waited for the train we could walk the route 10 times up and down. So forget the train when you are able to walk the route yourself.
Fadhloun Mosque
This fascinating mosque is located in the northeast of the island, away from the main road. It was originally an Ibadite mosque - Ibadism is a religious rite - which later passed into the hands of Malekites. On the evidence of architectonic data from a series of fairly similar mosques, Fadhloun Mosque probably dates to the 8th century Hegira, which correlate to 14th c. AD.
The complex consists of Mesjid (prayer hall), Kuttab (Koranic school), Midha (ablution room), a mill and a bakery. The mosque seems to have retained its original state, while the annexes aere added as the building evolved in the course of time. The Kuttab attests to the mosques educational role.
The monument's architecture displays some visible defensive features. It belonged to a chain of mosques built not far from the coast, constituting a second line of defence.
