5000 Skanes, Monastir, Tunisia
We've been to this hotel last year (2006). It'a nice hotel, best fit for families with children.
Pluses:
+ great pool;
+ good food - you can eat as much as you can. We've been on HB, but we didn't need anything else.
+ nice people;
+ the room was cleaned and the towels were changed each day;
+ there are few guys near the pool which entertained guests. Don't expect something "wild". It's mostly for kids/wifes so you can have a quiet morning/afternoon near the pool. Those guys were pretty enthusiastic and they were doing a good job: they were pretty crowded. If you want more excitement, there are skijets and few boats in the neighbourhood;
+ Hotel is between Monastir and Sousse - about the same distance - and you can visit them both for about 7 dinars (around 4+ EUR) with taxi or around 1 dinar with bus. If you catch the bus, take it. It's clean, and it won't be much longer than the taxi travel;
Minuses:
- furniture was a bit old, with some visible age-marks on them. Still, it was clean and functional. Not sure if it's a real "minus", because if you'd go to a holyday, you're not going to stay much into your room;
- right out of the hotel's yard, there are a lot of guys who wants to sell you something. They're a bit pushy, but if you're ferm on your positions and say "no", they will go away after all;
- It's 2 km from airport. Sometimes you might be annoyed by the jets taking off. We weren't;
Other recomandation:
+ visit Tunis, Sidi Bou Said and Carthage;
+ visit the desert;
+ visit Sousse and Port El Kantaoui;
+ go to Medina from Sousse - if you like negotiate with sellers. If not, there's a state store right at the entry of Medina where you can buy almost the same stuff a little more expensive;
Conclusion - we'll go back there. And that's for sure.

I have been 2 weeks in northern
Tunisia, mostly at the Skanes
El Hana Hotel near Monastir. Great beaches beautiful weather ( too
warm for some, but not for me).
Made trips to Tunis, Carthago,
Monastir, Sousse, Kairouan and
El Djem, all separately mentioned.
The hotel was a 4*, with breakfeast and dinner included. It was built ca.
30 years ago, so it got a bit old by now, the personel is very friendly
and complanits are handeled instantaneously. The showers are not quite to modern standard, ours
did not function for 2 days, until we complanied, and it was fixed on the
spot. Nice swimming pool, but the
depth is 3 m everywhere, no steeper places. there is a swim-ming pool for children too. The hotel has a little sop. but I advise not buying water or anything from there, as prices are 3-4 times as high. No
refrigerator in the room, burt a cable tv, the rooms are big, but the bed was kind of small for 2, however I
did't regret it, my wife may have. The
food was plenty, but not always of
the best quality, nearly every 2nd got
sick some day. For buying water and other daily necessary things there is a shop at 500 meters, but
you have to cross a desert-like landscape, througgh the roads i would be 2-3 Km. Nice evening
shows and whole day animation.
I would have stayed 2-3 days more if I could.
Hi everyone does anyone what the weather is currently like?
will it be possible to swim in the ocean and maybe snorkel?
Were staying on a half board basis at the Skanes El Hana, i have read that this hotel is a few miles away from the center, which altho not a problem, but are taxi's a bunch of thieves like in jamiaca?
What sort of food can i expect from the hotel buffet list and maybe at some restaurants local to the area'?
Is there lobster an what does that cost? My favorite food :)
Thanks for any replys all is much appriciated, espically what the weather is like there at the moment
Cheers
Mark
hi there, not sure about your hotel but when i went there a few years ago, the taxi drivers were not that bad, their english was not that great and they oggled me and stared which made me feel very uncomfortable beign a woman in that country. in fact the men were downright rude in their staring. the food in the resorts were normal food bacon,eggs, sausage etc for breakfast, shrimps etc for main courses, very good in fact and they usualy have bowls of oranges outside the local cafe's for the passerbys to eat when wondering around.
the restuarants in the tourist areas were very good and very reasonable. we asked a taxi driver to take us to his favourite restuarant and we had a very nice time. had a 3 course meal for about US$10 for two people. realy local place with plastic chairs but the people were very happy to see us in there eating their food and they made a real effort. local places dont sell alcohol.
checked out the weather and it is cold there at the moment about 60 degress. best advice is to wonder around and stop off at a restuarant that catches your fancy. Enjoy your holiday!
PS - agree on a taxi price before you get in, they also tried to rip us off by claiming language problems.
