Daytrips from Hammamet

by onaquest

Basically I have a Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday DAYTIME free, and would like to get out of Hammamet. But I must be back in Hammamet for the evenings.
GIVE ME ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS!!!!

What is best? Louage, bus, train? Fastest? Cheapest?
How early do the louage start in the morning?
How long does it take to get to Sousse? ElJem? Gabes? Other places?

Thankyou for your help!

I used Louages a few times when travelling around Tunisia.

As for day trips from Hammamet take the Louage to Sousse about 1 hour away. Sousse is a bit of a transit hub from there you can jump into another louage and go to El-Jem 1 hour away or Mahdia and Monister is worth a visit proberly 20mins away. Gabes is looking about 3 hours but I haver never got there. Louages go when full.

You can always return back up to Tunis and take the local train to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said or La-Marsa or stop some of the other destinations along the way.

Travel Tips for Hammamet

Hammamet

"Expectations"

This was the first problem. The hotel Dar Hyet was listed as both 4 and 5 on various sights and booked as 4 * with Thomas Cook. Looks nice on first appearance but closer it is a bit run down. No service at the pool area......constantly had to search for staff. Food and drink is +++++ overpriced. Staff will rip you off. For example, keeping a room on prior to departing was quoted at 40 dinars......tried to charge 60. Do not exchange money here...no display of exchange rates and they provide this 'service' to you while they make a huge profit from it. In general not a nice feeling abot the place at all

"The Resort"

Greece, Turkey, Egypt etc all ask you not to flush paper in the loo as their sewage systems can't manage it. Hammamet does not make this suggestion...but oh boy they should. Never have I been anywhere that smelled so bad. The town is also very dirty.....no litter bins so the streets are filthy. Nabule and Sousse much much cleaner. The Medina and Fort have no real character about them and the town has nothing attractive about it . Tunisian cuisine few and far between.Pizza and burgers in great supply and were tastey enough. Be prepared to eat late in Ramadam nothing much open till after 9pm

"The Culture"

Having traveled widely, have never been subject to such miserable, dishonest and downright rude people. Reps advise start bartering at about half their price. RUBBISH, their prices are grossly inflated. Example...I expressed an interest in a charm for my bracelet. 48 dinar he started at with a flurry of weighing it etc......no way was i beginning at 24, so I walked away. He chased me down the street, lowering his price right down to 5 dinar. This was the same throughout the holiday....no way was it honest or fair. The shop or stall keepers would be angry when we did not buy their inflated tat and had the cheek to suggest that we lacked respect...Not a nice experience
