We hired a "Grand Taxi" and explored the local countryside. One of our stops was at the village of Sidi Jdidi. We visited the local health spa, which runs on natural underground hot water that are full of natural minerals. We then drove up into the "Saw" mountains with its wonderful views of the distant coastline
In all the local villages we were made very welcome by the locals.
NOT for the people

Tourism is very big in Hammamet. It is a beautiful place and the beach is amazing. You'll find many, many luxury hotels there, which, as Tunisia is a poor country, are pretty cheap to us Westerners.
Hammamet was a little traumatizing to us, as we couldn't get used to the locals, who are incredibly touchy-feely and who litterally harass tourists on the street. If you're looking for some beach, purely because of the attitude of the people there, I would recommend you choose Sousse over Hammamet.
