Do they speak fluent French in Hammamet?

by roxylocks

Hi, I'm going to stay in Hammamet in April. Being a French A level student, I was wondering whether standard French was widely spoken in this area, and whether I would have the opportunity to be surounded by French speakers, so I could intergrate with the culture whilst practising my French?
Are there any towns or villages nearby, where I'd have a chance to speak with French-speaking locals?
Would there be many French tourists around?
Cheers ;)

Languagemark.

It is my understanding that French is widely utilised as a second language in Tunisia. I shall be able to tell you for certain later in the year (or you can come back to this thread and tell me!) but for now I am basing my opinion on my guidebook and other sources of info (including VT).

French is taught in Tunisian schools from the age of 8.

Having been to Tunisia twice I can confirm that in Hammamet, French is widely spoken. Perhaps not your "standard" school French, but easily understandable. Just use the French you have(probably quite good as an A-level student) and you'll find that most of the locals will respond in French. Hammamet is a resort widely used by the French, so you'll probably also find them in your hotel.

Agree with the last post. I have only been once to Tunisia and tell you they speak french fluently.

Many of the north african countries speak french. It's like Arabic is no1. French No2. English No3.

Thank you very much for your answers, they have been very helpful :) Could you recommend any near by villages/towns for local colour?

Mahdia is an interesting place to visit but it is a couple of hours away down on the coast but is worth a visit.

A nice day trip, maybe tie it in with a visit to El-Jem.

Nabeul is the other significant town close to Hammamet, known for its earthenware jars, lamps etc etc.Plenty of little villages on the Cape Bon peninsular for "real" local colour. Local "colour" in Hammamet and Nabeul is for the tourists, although there may still be a camel market from time to time in Nabeul.

Travel Tips for Hammamet

sidi bou said

Sidi Bou Said this lovely blue and white village, gaily perched on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Tunis, is perhaps the most cherished in Tunisia. The legend tells of Saint Louis - coming to wage war he fell in love with a Berber princess and, changing his name became the patron saint of this village where he lived in joy and peace. Visit Sidi Bou Said, fall under its charm and the story will seem most logical.

"Big salt lake - CHOTT EL JERID"

It is the largest salt pan of the Sahara with a surface area of over 7,000 km² (some sources state 5,000 km²). Due to the extreme climate with annual rainfall of only 100 mm and temperatures reaching 50° C, water evaporates from the lake. In summer Chott el Djerid is almost entirely dried up, and numerous fata morganas occur.

South of Chott el Djerid, the Grand Erg Oriental desert begins. The towns of Kebili and Douz are also located south of the lake.

The lake can be crossed by foot and even by car, but this is very dangerous since the salt crust isn't always too firm.

Jezioro stanowi największą słony obszar na Saharze, liczący według różnych źródeł od 5000 km² do 7000 km² powierzchni. Ze względu na ekstremalne warunki klimatyczne, średnie roczne opady sięgające zaledwie ok. 100 mm i temperatury dochodzące do 50°C, woda wyparowuje z jeziora. W okresie letnim jezioro wysycha niemal zupełnie.
