Tej Marhaba: Best Hotel in Sousse

by mkwife

Tej Marhaba is a fantastic hotel. It has its own shopping centre (quite expensive though), Rose and Crown pub – English pub with a hint of Irish (supposedly – couldn’t work that out at all)!! Its bit dark and depressing in there for my liking, but each to their own. Dolce Vita restaurant (pizza is nicer in the Oasis restaurant by the pool) and the nightclub (never went there). The only gripes we had was the rubbish customer service. But we found that all over Tunisia, not just the hotel. They don’t seem to like the English very much for some reason!!!

The room was absolutely fine, the bed was comfortable, the carpets were clean, the balcony was clean. The bathroom was not quite as clean as I personally would have liked but I just bought cleaning fluid and a couple of cloths and cleaned it myself!! There was a fridge in the room big enough to store 3 large bottles of water, and a little freezer section for ice cubes. There was a telly in the room with only 2 English channels..

The pool area is heavenly. The pool is refreshingly cool, and there are many sunbeds to choose from, under parasols or not. The mattress guy will come straight over to you to put mattress on your sunbed. We normally gave him 1dinar tip for us both. But by the end of the holiday, we had to join in with the ‘save your sunbed club’ and tip him 2 dinars to save our sunbeds!! Otherwise all the sunbeds are taken by the time you have finished your breakfast on a hot day!

The restaurant is ok. Very little fruit though…. Only watermelon and peaches…..

Breakfast – Freshly cooked pancakes and doughnuts, two types of cereal, eggs, sausage, toast, etc. Unfortunately we broke the toaster on our third day so now they do all the toast in the kitchen and leave it in a basket for the guests, its alright if you like cold toast!! (Sorry everyone…)

Dinner - If you are not a vegetarian you will find plenty of choices, 2 choices of soup, 3 different meats, rice, chips, potatoes, vegetables, etc. The puddings are lovely. I had chocolate cake everyday!

Sousse itself is brilliant!! If you leave the hotel from the shopping centre and turn right and follow the street, after about ten minutes you will come into the main town centre. On the way you will see that the streets are clean and well swept. There are lots of little shops to look in; restaurants to eat in and there are cash points every two minutes. The shop owners will see you and say “come look in my shop”, but when you say ‘No thank you’ they just let you go. They really don’t give you any grief. Once you say no, they leave you alone. The Medina is good, but it can be very hot and claustrophobic once you get into the centre of it.

We visited Port El Kantoui, which is nice but really glad we didn’t stay there. It is nice, but a bit too quiet for us and it is a man made area around a port surprisingly enough!!

We did the Sahara Trip which was fantastic – only thing I will say is don’t take young children. It is roughly a 600 round mile trip and is well worth the money. You will have to pay an extra 20 dinars for the camel ride and the 4x4 trip into the mountains. TIP - When you get off coach to go on green horse and carts – take insect spray as you will be eaten alive!!
