More about Marhaba Royal Salem

Thumbs Up to Royal Salem!

by TripAdvisor Member racingqueen

Just returned from 1 week at the Marhaba Royal Salem and loved it. And as my hubby always says im Very Picky!
The foyer of this hotel is just gorgeous. Marble pillars and floors.leather sofas.....panoramic lifts. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful and all speak good english.
When we entered our room i thought we were in USA....the room was huge with a mega bed.........carpeted floors....bathroom very clean but a little dated. My only complaint was as someone previously wrote that the towels smelt horrendous.....you can have them changed daily but they still smelt horrid even when new and dry. I seem to think they are only being washed at very low temperatures.......so please take at least youre own hand/face towel.
We pad for a sea-view room but was hardly worth it as the hotel is quite a way back from the sea and being only 3 floors high we were looking at other buildings too.
The restaurant was all buffet style and the choice of food was extremely good. Especially loved breakfasts as not only was there a huge choice of buffet items hot+cold but chefs prepared fresh hot omelettes and pancakes to order in front of you and they were to die for. Evening meals had lots of choice.....soup...vast salad bar.......choice of around 4 hot pasta dishes.......hot meats........fish.....paella.......the list is endless..............and the desserts......wow. they were the best desserts i have ever had abroad.
We asked to up-grade to all inclusive and paid £8 pp per day and was well worth it. As well as food+drinks you a also had unlimited access to the sauna, steam room, indoor pool and gym.
There are 3 pools on site however all 3 were freezing cold when we were there. The largest pool is superb with huge slides etc.
The walk to the beach is through the lovely gardens however the path is very uneven and quite a few people slipped on it whilst we were there. The beach is lovely. very well kept and free beds.
There is a nice beach bar belonging to the hotel which serves lovely snacks at very reasonable prices.
The evening entertainment in the Royal Salem and its sister hotel Salem next door leaves a lot to be desired. We enjoyed the karaoke but apart from that it was atrocious. There is a night club within the complex but we never went in. We spent most of our evenings in the moorish cafe where a great guy called hussain really looked after us (Eddie Murphy look-a-like!.). He introduced us to the "bubble pipe" and although none of my part y of 4 smokes we really enjoyed smoking the fruit flavours they use. Was great fun.
The hotel is situated between Sousse and Port El Kantaoui. We did vist the medina at Sousse which was a great experience but would not want to stay there.it is a very busy working city and not at all pretty. However Port El Kantaoui is beautiful..has a lovely harbour...........great shopping.........a wonderful funfair for the children and a tiny zoo.
We would definitley return to this hotel and would recommedn it to couples and families. There was about a 50/50 mix of english and russian guests and a few tunisian people.
We felt very safe when we were out and about but dont be fooled by the guys who come up to you whilst shopping and tell you they are waiters. porters from your hotel.......apparently they get you to follow them to their friends shops and bazaars and you have all on getting away without buying something. We were approached once and we just carried on walking and he didnt bother us at all.
in general the Tunisian people were lovely and really do love the english visitors.

Hotel Royal Salem in Sousse

by erikute3534 about Hotel Royal Salem in Sousse

Price was very good - 20$ per person including breakfast and dinner. Its a nice place close to the beach but most hotels are close to the beach there:) Rooms are exelent and service good too! Much better than hotel we had in Egypt, and much cheaper of course!

january 2007

we were in the Marhaba Royal Salem at the same time as the family who compared the hotel service to Malaysia. This family were well looked after and their children received much attention from the staff. Tunisia in January is not an area with guaranteed sunshine, in fact it's luck with the weather in January. The hotel does not advertise tea making facilities, so with three children, why not take a travel kettle? Perhaps the wrong hotel was chosen by this family (the wife incidentally appeared to be Malaysian) so the comparison is biased! We have been to Tunisia 7 times over past 10 years and have never been disappointed. This hotel had an excellent choice of quality food and attentive service. We shall return again this year as the hotel met our expectations and was extremely good value with good food. Incidentally, taxis are cheap and local trains are very cheap, there are many places to travel to from Sousse easily and cheaply. Perhaps this family would be better suited elsewhere.

Went to relax but nothing to do even if ya wanted to

Marhaba Royal Salem
Jan 17 to 31st 07

We have just come back after 2 weeks there and I was looking forward to having a nice restful holiday. We tend to go to Malaysia every year and I was tired of driving all the time. This was booked with dialaflight who I always use as they are very good. My wife, 3 children aged 3, 1.5yrs and 5mnths and my parents went. The hotel was nice and the staff very friendly though I would say this is more akin to a 3star hotel. There are no tea making facilities, no fridge, no iron and a standard 20" tv with 3 english channels and 17 others. The kettle was important due to making milk for our child, we had to go to the bar on the ground floor every time we wanted boiled water. This was just hassle but we had no choice.

The room was quite spacious as we had 4 in one room and our eldest with my parents in the other. There is a problem at night with the music as it comes straight into the the room. There is good soundproofing from the door but it stopped us from sleeping some nights till 12midnight. Not sure what they could have done except move it out the hotel. The facilities like the gym, salon, sauna, table tennis and other activities all had to be paid for. Activities around 2pound/5Dinar for half hr. We were told that there is nothing for free there unlike the hotels in Malaysia.

The gardens are nice and the general package of the hotel is nice. We stayed H/B but being almost vegans there wasn't much choice, so we had to eat eggs otherwise we would have had to go without. You will get hassled on the beach as you walk along to buy things but not on the hotels beach as it is private to some degree. Overall the holiday was ok sousse is hassleless eveyone as the best things and I got ripped off at the medina. Always got to the goverment shops first then to the medina so you know what price to pay otherwise u will be paying 3 times the amount you should. Port el kantaoui is just a harbour and with expensive places for fish around 22quid for a whole fish(sea bass) not much bigger than your forearm.

taxis are 3dina to sousse and 4 to port kantaoui, they will try to rip ya off just set a price or ask for the meter to be put on.

would we go back...nope as there is nothing really there. sea was cold in jan but managed to get some quick swimming done, it is quite warm as well we had 20's while here in uk it was gails and snow...
put some pics so u can check it out

Not A Bad Hotel For Regional Standards

by TripAdvisor Member catherinecec

This being my first visit to Tunisia and being a travel consultant myself, this is how I genuinely found the hotel and its staff to be. I chose this hotel based solely on the reviews I had read on here as I had struggled to find decent reviews on most 4* and higher hotels anywhere in Tunisia. The Royal Salem is a good hotel by Tunisian standards but not by European standards at all. The room was clean and the maid service good. The food buffet style was varied and a good choice each day. The service in the royal salem restaurant was very good but the bar/foyer /reception staff let it down badly as they where not as efficient as I would have liked and appeared to ignore you somewhat, and could do with smiling a little be more..most of the staff appeared to be quite miserable a lot of the time. Not sure if its just the time of year perhaps its different in the summer. There where quite a number of French guests and other nationalities, which did'nt bother me at all. Sousse and Port El Kantoui are about a 30min walk to both or 5mins in a taxi. We spent a lot of time in PEK as it was nicer than sousse, the marina is particularly nice. The Sahara trip is a must ..full programme of events but tiring!! On the whole I enjoyed it but wo'nt be returning to Tunisia..my advice would be to stay in PEK as there is more going on especially at night.

Overall good hols - J & L

My wife and I stayed at The Royal Salem in June this year, 2006, for 2 weeks. The weather was great. Initial impressions of the hotel were impressive and indeed most aspects of the hotel were very good. The bar staff were quite ignorant in that on occasions nothing short of a flare would attract their attention! Our room and sea view were both lovely. The pool area was very relaxing, get in early with the sunloungers though! The pool was ok albeit a bit cool! The lifeguard man was a great bloke. If you smile at him and talk to him he will smile back and is very interesting. he doesn't want tipping, just civility amidst all the miserable and rude Russians! The little pizza restuarant was ideal for lunch. The beach was disappointing in that it was small and crammed with loungers but it does open a bit if you walk along. The 2 day Sahara trip was well worth the money. Although tiring with a lot of time spent on the bus, it has to be a must and our photos and memories reflect that. Don't forget to take plenty of snacks with you, plus your camera! Sousse itself is an experience and again well worth while. Just be calm and forceful with the street sellers! Just be really careful with the taxis and make sure they are clear upfront with the fare - some will try and rip you off without a care in the world. The only real problem was the restuarant. Although the food was ok, they have this utterly crazy seating policy whereby you are allocated a table for the whole of your stay. Not too bad until you have to share it with 2+ people the WHOLE time. Alright if you like that sort of thing and to be fair we were lucky with our compnay but it's a hopeless set up if you want quiet and romantic meals. This seemed to stress out staff and guests alike. I'd be interested to hear other people's views on this..... However, generally we had a really enjoyable and relaxing time and the 2 day trip really topped it off.

Could do better

by TripAdvisor Member pam1948

Hotel is very luxurious upon entering but rooms need to be refurbished and updated.
There are only two electric sockets, one for the t/v. and one for a hairdryer/shaver in the bathroom more need to be installed.
Electric lights need to be brightened up - rooms are very dark at night.
Gym facilities are chargeable and expensive. This was not made clear in the brochure.
Indoor pool needs to be heated.
All staff were friendly and helpful.
All in all a good holiday and two-three star hotel.

fantasic 2 weeks

by TripAdvisor Member gillie12345

my dad myself and my daughters went for 2 weeks 2005. we had the best holiday, the staff i couldnt fault, they really couldnt do enough for us. rooms were spotless. food was the best i have ever had abroad, even though it was quiet in january, staff made sure the kids were entertained day and night, i thoughly recomend this hotel. we will be returning in spring this year, i didnt like souse in general but didnt need to leave the hotel much anyway, the indoor pool is lovely and we also could use the sister hotels facilities, the evening entertainment was brilliant, and again the staff were so friendly, they obviously enjoy their jobs of entertaining us, we loved this holiday

can't fault the hotel

by TripAdvisor Member kayShropshire

my partner and i have just returned after a weeks holiday. we went to relax and no matter how much we tried it was not possible. we wre constantly being hassled and offered drugs where ever we went.we were to frightened to leave the hotel especialy at night it weas frightning.

the hotel its self was goregous, cleaned to a high standard and the staff were very helpful andf polite. there is nothing to do even if you wanted to. we had rain for 4 days solid which ment we were stuck in the hotel with nothing to do. for me this isn't my idea of a holiday and sadly will not be returning to tunisia.

PORT EL KANTAOUI

by Josibezz

"PORT EL KANTAOUI"

Port El Kantaoui known as "The First Mediterranean Garden Port" an enchanting and well protected harbour.

"PORT EL KANTAOUI GATE"

Just entering the Marina, appreciating its arched and cobbled alleys, gardened squares and lamplit quays which give the place an 'old world' charm.

"Wooden Ships at Kantaoui"

We have never seen such wonderful ships. They really add a touch of class to this marina which was inaugurated in 1979 adding a new dimension to Tunisia's tourism.

"Another Ship:)"

More amazing ships while going around the ten-acre ,340-berth marina.

"A new experience on the TUK TUK"

We used this KIND of transport to take us to Port El Kantaoui. It was fun though not much safety standards. Its colours {not mentioning its rust} reminds me of Barbie Doll Toys:):) Pink and Lilac. Anyway its very cheap and it did take us to our destination!!!!!!

"This time with the CALECHE"

It was also a nice experience. Obviously it took us longer to arrive but it gave us more the chance to explore our way to the Marina from our Royal Salem Hotel.

"The Marina"

Inside the marina you can find all the comforts from restaurants to Hotels. Souvenir shops, cafes etc. We bought some souvenirs from there and at the end we had a decision to make as well. We bought the souvenir and then the shop owner really ended praying us to sell him our 2yr old son's shoes. Actually we were in his shop and the owner became our customer:):) but no no our son still got his shoes back to Malta.
