  • Nice hotel on beach

    by

We stayed in Royal Beach for a week.
It's location was ideal for my family. We love to shop and only in 300 metres there is this shopping center where are clothes, bags and shoes suitable for my kind of taste. It situated another way from the town centre so it's possible that many tourist doesn't even find it.
Next to hotel there is construction site, but it didn't disturbe us.

The hotel has own, quite peaceful (some hawkers) beach. The hotel itself is quite pretty and decorated with a taste. Rooms are small but functional. Only the cleaning woman could have done her work better. There were some spider nets in the corners of our room. I must reveal that the cleaning woman was untrustworthy. Her behavior was the only really negative experience in our hotel. Another workers in Royal Beach were nice and did their job properly.
The hotel arranged some evening entertainment which was very enjoyable and funny.

Our stay included breakfast which was quite special kind of. First morning it was difficult to find something which i have used to eat so i had to change my eating habits. End of the week I was totally used to those foods. Tunisian coffee was amazingly good.

Unique Quality: It is nice that they have both indoor and outdoor pool. Like in every beach in Sousse, our hotels sunbathing beds and chairs (on beach and by the pool) cost some money. About 2 euros/day.

In breakfast there is a cook who makes you an omelet and you can say if you don't like something that he has planned to put on that days omelet.

No place for Royalty

Just got back from the Royal Beach, Sousse. Having read the reviews before going i can honestly say it wasn't as bad as i had expected. The hotel staff were great and i can only praise them for there friendly manner and eagerness to please. HOWEVER!!! The place really could use a good hose down, a scrub with a CLEAN cloth and a bit more dedication to maintenance. Having gone there with a nine month old baby who is crawling and putting everything he sees into his mouth, there were parts of the hotel that i wouldn't let him crawl around in. The shower curtain in my room was brand new by the way!

There was some confusion over prices of drinks in the hotel, i.e. a bottle of red wine was 13 dinnars in the hotel restaurant and 15 in the bar, beers were cheaper at the hotel's beach bar too. Why????? No-one seems to know! If anyone is going there soon, don't expect the Ritz, but if you do have any problems tell the hotel staff and they'll do whatever they can to fix it. Be aware that you DON'T always get what you pay for, but make the most of it and enjoy!

Brilliant Holiday

by TripAdvisor Member Cococat

Got back early hours of this morning, LOVED it, we have spent a fortnight laughing. OK so the hotel is a little jaded but clean and extremely friendly, the location was brill, hop out of bed to the pool or straight onto the beach, plenty of shops, cafes etc a few minutes walk from the gates and near enough to get into the main part of Sousse and the Medina, and also not too touristy like Port el Kantoui, not my cup of tea, only went once, but down to personal choice. Found the choice of food at dinner ok most nights 3-4 choices of fish, pork, beef, chicken and other items, also always rice, potatoes and chips to choose from and most nights pasta, only ate out once so can't be that bad, if you want 5 star food then don't go to 3 star hotel, you get what you pay for and found this was great as a base to explore as usually go self-catering and not to spend 2 weeks in a hotel.

Found the Medina fascinating and laughed for most of the time with a few no thankyous and keep walking, no problems. Thanks to whoever included in their review about the beautiful house/museum Dar Essid, this was fantastic if you want a change from sun worshipping.

Made friends with some Tunisians (male and female) and found them so hospitable, spent several nights out with them, people in general were great they have a brill sense of humour and as with anywhere if you treat people with respect you get it back ten-fold, this was certainly the case.
Try to use a few words of arabic or french such as hello, goodbye, thankyou, we found this went a long way when out and about.

All in all a brilliant holiday and am now hooked, can't wait to go back.

What a blast

What more can I say. The hotel was basic but the staff made it a great place to stay. The food was really appetising and there was a good selection. If you couldn't see what you wanted the staff were only too glad to try and help you. The rooms were cleaned every day and because the hotel was small you received a more personal service from all the staff, whether you were male, female or children. There was entertainment every night and you didn't need to leave the hotel at night if you didn't want. it was great going on the local transport called the tuk-tuk. Try it! We all liked it so much that we are going back next year. Can't wait.

Great Holiday!

Have just returned from a hoilday at The Royal Beach Hotel in Sousse with my husband and eight year old daughter - we really enjoyed ourselves the hotel could do with a little updating in places, but the staff were always friendly and helpful and made a fuss of our daughter which she really enjoyed! The room was light and airy and cleaned every day we had a side view of the beach which was fine lovely sun rises and the sound of waves to wake up to! the beach was great right on the doorstep, both indoor and outdoor pools seemed very clean if a bit cold! may have been because it was so hot outside (mid 80's whilst we were there) I did hear a few people moaning about the choice of food in the restaurant but I have to say we found it ok, I would say if your expecting roast beef and yorkie pud or english style fish & chips give it a miss you shouldnt be visiting North Africa in the first place stick to the Spanish Costas! It can be a bit tedious at times being approached all the time to buy things but give a firm no thank you, smile and go about your business that should do the trick. Plenty of places to visit we were never bored. We were a bit wary before we came but very pleasantly suprised by the time we left and will definately consider going back, beautiful country and the people we met very welcoming.

Royal Beach is OK

by TripAdvisor Member DJRay

Just got back from Sousse , I really enjoyed it .We did have a couple of unsavoury episodes ( being English scum by local youths on one occassion )but on the whole it was a nice place to stay
The hotel is adequate , after a few problems on the first night , the rest of the time went by without problem.
The rooms are a little cramped for four adults but as a 2 star hotel , that is to be expected .The food was basic but nourishing although they could be more immaginative with the desserts .
The pool area is clean and uncluttered , the beach access can`t be faltered and the bar area a little basic but clean .Sami behind the bar did a excellent job of keeping us refreshed
One other unfortunate problem is the drug pushers constantly offering their services .
Overall I would say that the Royal Beach is OK as long as you understand that it is 2 star

honeymoon from hell

by A TripAdvisor Member

Arrived at Royal Beach hotel full of anticipation,We were told we would get a special welcome because it was our honeymoon, and we would be greeted with a basket of fruit and bottle of wine in our room. Four days later(after constant requests)we received a plate of left over fruit from breakfast covered with a piece of tinfoil. It had to be thrown away the next day.Nothing special about that!
The sheets were only changed once during our forteen days stay. The room was so small you could hardly get the doors open leading to the balcony. The chairs in the entertainment area/reception were filthy.they must have been there since the hotel was first opened. We were told there would be entertainment every night.NOT TRUE!!
The food was discusting. The menu did not vary. It seemed only the flies enjoyed the food,in fact my wife was ill and couldn't go to work when we arrived home.Met plenty of nice people most of whom were in the same opinion as us.If you are thinking of going to sousse give the Royal Beach a definite miss.

Hotel Royal Beach-Distinctly average

by A TripAdvisor Member

I stayed at the Hotel Royal Beach in Sousse for two weeks in October 2005. As a three star hotel, it did exactly what it said on the tin. The food was distinctly average-basic north african fare which could have done with a bit more flare-but at least it wasn't all about the full english and the burgers. And the balcony overlooking the beach almost compensated for the rudeness of the waiter who we refused to tip after he short changed us on night one. When we moved to another waiter's station in the restaurant, we started tipping and in exchange therefor, received the odd smile and wine on request.

The main advice I'd offer is to get out of Sousse for a few days and visit Sidi Bou Said in the north and also go to the Sahara and the south of the country. Tunisia has more to offer than the Hotel Royal Beach.

Fantastic Place

by A TripAdvisor Member

We have stayed at the Hotel Royal Beach 6 times since Xmas 2004 and NEVER had one bad experience, The staff are the biggest asset of the hotel and if not treated with disrespect (as we have witnessed on several occaisions) by people who think they are better than them because it is a relativly poor country you will find ALL the staff will go out of their way to please.
The food is good Tunisian fare and as long as you don't expect egg&chips or a fry up and are willing to try new things you will be well fed, however if there is nothing on the menu that you fancy; a simple polite word with one of the waiters will produce something you do like.
During the summer Season there is normally entertainment in the large foyer every evening but during the winter season this is less.
The Rooms are Clean and are tended daily (this we know as the cleaner had to wake us up every morning from the night before).
Any illness reported to the staff gets a very prompt response if required by a doctor.
The 2 day Sahara trip is well worth the time, it is hard and fast but pays for itself on the first day
sunrise Xmas morning from the sahara is out of this world.
If you are and probably will be approached by street sellers or those in the souk(market)then be firm but polite with your "no thanks" my wife and I have never felt threatened in any way whislt in Tunisia and there is very little crime.
If you don't like coach trips the hotel are happy to arrange a car with guide at a very reasonable cost.
They say that a holiday is what you make it but the staff at the Hotel Royal Beach make it even better, our heartfelt thanks to Mr Rashid(manager)Foued(bar manager)salim(waiter)sami(waiter)the 3 mohameds, azeesa(snack bar) Kaled(eurobar)Jay(dj)Akmed(taxi driver who went for our kebabs most nights)hotel Security staff and anyone we have forgot.

The royal Beach hotel ....a DIRTY SLUM

by TripAdvisor Member dannymidd

We arrived in Sousse on the 1st of January this year and having traveled to such places as Egypt , Gambia and Ibiza were aware that Tunisia is a North African/ Islamic Country, however we did not expect to to find what we encountered in the royal beach, this may turn out to be quite a lengthy review and all occurances are true and happened during our stay.

The Reception area seemed quite clean upon our arrivial untill one of our party went to use the toilet which had the remnamts of the previous user still in the pan .... we put that down to some one not as considerate as our selves..

No indication of how to use the air conditioning/heater was given when we entered our room , as it was late in the eveing when we arrived we really didnt get a good look at the state of the room untill the following morning when as you will see from the pictures we found that the cleaning of the floor of the room left a lot to be desired ....

We duely went down for breakfast bearing in mind that this hotel claims to be a 3 star hotel .. if you do not like eggs or bread then really you have had it two of our party asked for an omelette and were given one omelette cut in half to share between them.... needless to say we never had another breakfast in the hotel.. Tunisia is a lovley country and is a bit more developed tourism wise than compaired to Egypt with the fact you can walk from the hotel and there are plenty of places where you will find some thing to eat , however I would say the Tunisians still have to grasp what breakfast is and that you dont want a pizza at 10am !!

Back to the Royal slum (sorry beach) The outdoor pool of the hotel looks as if it has never had the leaves removed from it for a good while and as it was warm but not outdoor pool weather , we did not venture into it, the private beach that the hotel has was clean however there is a car park next to the hotel where locals come on the beach for various "activities" on the last day of our stay we actually found a hypodermic needle on the beach which may have been left by tourists or by locals so be careful with young kids who venture away from the part of the beach that is reseverd for the hotel.

Evening meals in the grotell ...ooops hotel are served in the same resteraunt as the breakfast on our second day at the hotel we decided to have a look at what was on offer and decided that it looked absolutley disgusting !!!.. having stayed in other islamic countries I can assure you that none of our party is your typical "saussage and chips brigade" and do in fact enjoy sampling the local cusine of the country that we are staying in but this time the food was dried out and looked totaly unapatising .. we ventured to the snack bar where the food was ok considering the price which was cheap as to be expected from a budget hotel . It should be noted however the locals also use the snack bar of the hotel as their local pub and it may feel just slightly intimidating having a meal in the snack bar .

Many tour operators and indeed web sites you may find regading Sousse will tell you that there is really no where to eat out side your hotel , If your staying at the royal beach there is an abundance of eateries around the area one that we found real value for money was the Saloon bar and grill which has a wide range of food at a very reasonable price and has a live singer on most evenings , the saloon also has a disco which looks like a mine shaft. You will also be told that there is not that many ATM,s or that the shops do not take VISA this is not true and there is a lot of bank machines all throughout the town.Another good place to eat is called TUTTI FRUITI as the pics of the ice cream show its worth a visit if only to try the chewing gum flavoured ice cream !!! they also do a wide variety of home made cakes and food you can also get a cup of HOT tea here !!!

A great game we played in our hotel room was called kill the creature , and be assured there was a lot of them namley COCKROACHES !!! also I would say if your unfortunate ennough to be in room 126 or any room on that side of the hotel take a pair of ear muffs with you as you will find that you can hear the Euro Pub disco which during the season is open till 4 am,

We decided on our Last eveing of staying in Sousse that we would give the hotel resteraunt another chance ....it was to be the night that none of us would never forget... The meal was actully very enjoyable UNTILL ...we had an uninvited visitor... you guessed mr COCKROACH was climbing up the wall !!!!

Some of the staff in the hotel could not do ennough for you especially Ninio the evening entertainment guy the highlight of the evening entertainment being the "travistie" show which is really a drag act and well worth going to see.

With a deep clean and perhaps a major refurbishment the Royal beach could drag its self up to the standard of a one star hotel .. however as it is at present my best advice for any one considering going to this hotel ..... DONT GO !!!

Also be warned change any Tunisian money you have before you go to the airport !! you could loose between 20 -40 % if you try to change any money at the Airport..

I would go back to Tunisia but certinaly not to the Royal Beach Hotel
