Hotel Habib

Slap bang in the middle of Nefta's main square is the cheap and friendly Hotel Habib. It is Nefta's one and only budget hotel, attracting a mix of Algerians, Tunisians and the odd foreign tourist (and some of them are very odd indeed!).

Rooms are clean yet basic, with en-suite showers (hot water!) but shared toilets down the corridor. All the rooms look out onto the square, which is great as far as views are concerned, less great if you are a light sleeper as it can get quite noisy.

The owner likes to chat, especially if you can speak a bit of Arabic, and some of the regular guests (mainly from El Oued just over the border in Algeria) are also keen to talk

The terrace on the roof is a suntrap, the ideal place to lie around in your bright red least, that's what an elderly overweight Belgian thought. He also thought it was his private balcony too, and was often to be found cavorting with young Tunisians in various states of undress. Nevertheless, it is a good place to hang your laundry out to dry, as well as to spy on the goings on down below in the square.

The best thing about Hotel Habib was the location...very central, right at the heart of things. Stay more than one night and you become known among the local shopkeepers and cafe owners, which means you don't get hassled at all when a tour bus arrives.

A single room costs 10TD per night. (April 2007: GB£1 = 2.5TD)

Sahara Palace: A littlke overrated, but very cosy

We stayed one night in the Hotel Sahara Palace and had lunch and diner here. The hotel was included in the trip we made to visit some oasis (you'll find all the stops we made on my Tunesia pages)

It's a good * * * hotel, but not worth the * * * * it is promoting
