Desert Oasis
Tozeur was one of my favorite cities in Tunisia. It seemed friendlier and easier to navigate than some of the others we had visited. We traveled here across the Chott el Jerid. That is definately a sight you would not want to miss!

Hi all!! Just wondering could anyone give me any information regarding 4wd trips into the sahara desert from Tozeur? How much does it cost and is it worth the trip.. I was considering a two day trip taking in the sights of the sahara... is accommodation normally included in the price given by tour operators?
Any advice given would be greatly appreciated,
Sandy
hi sandy,
i just got back from there. local travel agencies have programs for a 3 day stay in the south (touzer or douz) including jeep excursion to the mountain oasis and into the desert. you can also go riding camels in douz. prices are 150-200 dinars - very much worth it!

The palmeraie (Palm-grove) used to be one of the most beautiful of the whole Sahara. Unfortunately, it has been deeply spoilt by tourism. Parts of it have been cut to build new hotels. Increase use of water has dried many of the 200 springs that watered it and many trees are dry and dead. When we visited it in 2002, it was far from as beautiful as it was on previous visits.
On our 1974 visit, as I said in another tip, there was a heat wave (yes, even in the Sahara, there can be heat waves as well as cold waves !) and during the day, the temperature in the palm-grove remained 55°C (131°F) all day long. We did not visit much of the oasis (we did it on other visits !) Our friendly guide brought us to the oued that collects water from the 200 springs of the oasis and we spend the whole afternoon and evening in the water, chatting with him and his friends.
As far as I have seen at my last visit to Tozeur, the oued has much less water (hotels need much water !) and often is completely dry, even in March !
One of our favourite activities in Tozeur proper was riding bikes in the town's huge palmeraie (palm grove). According to our guide, there are over 200,000 palm trees spread over 10 square kilometres! Needless to say, trying to cover all that area on foot seemed somewhat foolish, so we rented a couple of bikes for half a day and took off.
An interesting sight in the palmeraie (aside from the beautiful palmeraie in itself) is the small village of Abbes, which really seems to come out of nowhere. At the edge of the village is a marabout (tomb) of holy man Sidi Bou Lifa. It is recognizable by the large jujube tree beside it. Another interesing sight, but for wholly different reasons, is the Planet Oasis Tozeur complex. Clearly intended for the wealthy and business travellers, the whole place reeks of, well, FAKE. Its lack of authenticity was in stark contrast to the genuine surprise (and interest!) of locals who were very curious about us two foreigners riding bikes in the palmeraie.
In short, it was great fun! If you don't have your own bike, you can rent one at a bike shop on Abdulkacem Chebbi Street. It cost us 15 dinars each for a 4-hour rental.
There are two sections of the Zoo, one with the animals and the second where the beautiful desert garden is situated.
The doorway to the animals section is build in the traditional local style with huge bird-cage on the top of it.
