View from the Belvédère in the seventies
by JLBG
The Belvédère is a rocky hill made of dry clay that overhangs the oasis from about 30 to 35 meters. The top of the Belvédère is a good view-point with a panoramic view on the whole oasis and on the western part of the Chott El Djerid.
Since this picture was taken, the belvédère has been cropped by bulldozers in order to get more space to build new hotels. However, there remains enough space on top for the view-point but the new hotels (and golf-course !) spoil somehow the view.
The "marabout" of Sidi Ali Bou Lifa
by JLBG
In the palm-grove, the famous "marabout" of Sidi Ali Bou Lifa is close to a huge jujube tree. A "marabout" is a kind of chapel that honor the memory of a saint man. It is often the dwelling of a family that take care of the building
The jujube tree, Ziziphus lotus (Linné)*, Zizouf in Arab is a very spinny shrub or tree that gives small fruits. Its branches are used to make hedges that cattle cannot pass.
Close up on a bunch of dates in the palm-tree
by JLBG
One bunch of dates can weight several kilos when it is collected ripe, in November. A visit to Tozeur in November would be a good choice (I had never the opportunity to do so), as it is the time of date harvest and the temperature is pleasant.
Tozeur Doors
by barryg23
In the older parts of town, around Rue de Kairouan, keep an eye out for the doors of the houses. If you look closely you'll see they contain different door knockers. Typically men, women and children have different ones with different sounds (men on the left, women right and children below). Thus a door with only two knockers indicates a family with no children.
the desert city of Mos Espa
by call_me_rhia
About 40 kilometres away from tozeur, along am unpaved track (and sometimes driving above high dunes) one can reach the desert city of Mos Espa - which in Star Wars is one of port cities on planet Tatooine.
All the film location - complete with (plastic) buildings - are still there for you to see. it's quite a sight in the middle of the desert - it really feels like you've landed on a different planet
