Matmata Hotel: A pseudo troglodyte hotel :-))))

by Elisabcn

I came to this hotel for the first time with *Nico*. Both we were looking for a kind of troglodyte experience during our trip to the desert. But when we saw what meant “to sleep in a troglodyte cave” . . . well we looked at each other . . . she did not dare to say anything and I said something idiot like “does the cave have heating”? :-))) Ok, ok so we decided to change hotel and we went to Matmata Hotel. It was almost empty in January so we were able to treat the price (I payed 45DT the first time and 40DT the second time, dinner and breakfast included both in 2009). And there is also the possibility to choose a room in “troglodyte style” :-D :-D. Of course everything is false but you can always take some pictures and back home try to convince your friends that you really slept in a troglodyte cave :-)))))
But the best thing of this hotel is its dinner!!! A fixed menu, you will be able to taste the real Tunisian food: a delicious chorba (kind of tomato soup), couscous, briks, chicken and mint tea and some local cakes for dessert. I really enjoyed this dinner and I dreamt about that chorba for a while :-))) so when other friends came to visit me I did not hesitate to take them there.
Ah! During low season there is no need to book in advance but it’s a good idea to call 2-3 hours before dinner to prevent them that you are arriving : cooking a good couscous takes time!

Pseudo troglodyte rooms
Ah, important! Yes, here the rooms have heating :-))))))

Dar Fatma

by foffa

by annsnook

A Great 4* hotel, friendly, helpful staff. A wide variety of tasty food. Beautiful location. Our room was a deluxe beach view room which also had a sitting area. Free massages and a Hammam (equivalent of a Turkish bath) - bliss. £350 all inclusive for a week in April (including flights and transfers etc) ...what a bargain...we couldn't believe our luck...and defo going back there ....a great short hall stop - only 3 hours flight from Manchester

Residence Warda, Tozeur: Nice place to stay in Tozeur

by rdhussan

We can highly recommend this place to stay in Tozeur. It is clean and quite cheep. We payed 32 TD for a double room in June 2008. You get a small breakfast included in price. The owner and stuff are very polite and helpfull.

Nice tarace, some rooms air condition

Tabarka: Hotel les anguilles

by Elisabcn

Nothing special but its ok, I mean its clean and has hot water. All the rooms have TV and air conditioning. I liked its open air restaurant, on a kind of veranda facing the street. The food (a simple menu with two starters, two main dishes and a dessert) was not bad and we only payed 5DT (price for the hotel guests, I think the menu cost 12DT). Prices per person depend on the season, I payed 35DT at the end of august (2008) breakfast included.

It's cheap and centrally situated

Le Kef - Hotel Sicca Veneria: OK option in centre of town

by Willettsworld

This hotel is named after a goddess that was worshipped here during the Roman occupation and they preserved the towns Punic name which was Sicca Veneria. The hotel lies in the centre of town and features a rather raucous bar which is about all there is as far as nightlife in the town (in fact I sank a beer whilst staying here). My room was fairly simple for TD22 which included a simply breakfast of bread, jam, coffee and a chocolate muffin. The room was OK and came with a TV that didn't seem to work whilst the bathroom had new wall tiles but the floor ones needed replacing.

Kairouan - Hotel Splendid: Good location

by Willettsworld

This mid-range simple hotel is well located by being just a short walk south of the main gate, Bab ech Chouhada, that leads into the Medina. Another reason for staying here is that the area is very quite as it lies in an area of small side streets so there's no noise. My room for a single person cost TD27,500 with breakfast and was simple with a bathroom which was OK and it did the job for the one night I was in Kairouan. The restaurant serves food from a set menu in the evening for TD7,500 which you can order in advance to save yourself TD2,500. There are only 3 choices for starter, main or dessert.

Abou Nawas Boujaafar Hotel Sousse: Great location beside beach

by Willettsworld

This is your typical tourist package hotel in Sousse. Advertised as a 4-star but rooms and general decor is really that of a 3-star. It's very well located for the beach and a short walk to the Medina so it wins brownie points for this. There are some good little restaurants nearby as well. Service was OK if nothing special. My room cost £25 during the new year period and was a good size but looked a bit tired and needs freshening up a little. The bathroom had cracked floor tiles but was clean. There was an annoying rattling noise from, I think, the air-con unit when it was windy. Breakfast was again typical touristy style and nothing special. I think the hotel is frequented by mostly French, German and Italian as all the little signs above the food were in these languages and not in English! The hotel come with a spa but you have to have a room that comes with the spa package in order to take advantage of it and the swimming pool. If you don't then you are able to take out a separate spa package but it's not cheap.

Ibn Khaldoun: Good 3 star option

by Willettsworld

Good cheap 3-star option that's located about 1km from Ave Habib Bourguiba. There's not that many restaurants nearby so I ended up walking for about 15 minutes in order to reach them and, as the trams finish early in the evening, 15 minutes back. Bear this in mind if considering this option. There's a good Champion supermarket nearby. The hotel itself was good with a good clean room with doublebed, TV, dressing table, mirror, wardrobe and clean bathroom. Breakfast wasn't anything fancy but simply did the trick which is how I would describe the hotel overall.

Tunis - Africa: Excellent location

by Willettsworld

I choose this hotel because of its location and because it was a good priced 5-star. Its location is ideal as its located on the southern side of the main Ave Habib Bourguiba, the main tree-lined thorughfare that runs from the Medina to the port. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby and its only a 5 minute walk to the Medina in one direction and a 5 minute walk to the TGM station in order to take a train to Carthage in the other direction.

The hotel itself has a nice lobby area with a bar and comfy seats. I arrived late after flying in from the UK but check-in was very quick and pleasant without any hassle. The room was very good with 2 single beds, 2 bedside tables, floor lamp, armchair, table, chair, desk/drawers, mini-bar, TV and some good views over the city as the hotel is one of the tallest buildings in the city. The bathroom was spotlessly clean with a WC, bidet, good shower/bath, hair dryer etc. The breakfast was plentiful but the hot dishes were mostly african/middle eastern along with breads, french pastries, yoghurts, juices etc. But the hotel lacks any extras such as a gym and a pool which one would expect from a 5 star hotel. I would call it a 4 star and a little bit more but not a western 5 star. I booked through hotelclub.com and got a good deal.
