OVERLAND CAMP, LAKE BUNYONYI: IN THE SHORES OF PARADISE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Nice place to stay near Kabale, the main departure point for the gorillas tracking excursions. In the shores of lake Bunyonyi, this camp offers the possibilities to camp with your own tent, to occupy a furnished tent or even to rest in a nice two beds cottage with bathroom facilities, all in a paradisiac environment, perfect for relaxing in the middle of the trip . The stuff is numerous and very friendly and helpful and tend to concentrate in the bar/restaurant zone.

Swimming area in the lake, free kayaks, off board boat for trips to the islands in the lake (bargain for the final price!), bar/restaurant with limited but delightful food, pool table.
    Excellent views, unique place.

HOTEL DIPLOMATE: IN THE HILLS OF KAMPALA
  • Satisfaction:
  • Good hotel for Ugandan standards, with big (even if quite old) rooms with complete bathroom and best of all the magical combination : electricity and hot water (you know, it is quite difficult to find both things in a hotel when out of the city!). The hotel also has a fine restaurat with a high diversity of meals served and specialliced in Indian food ( apart of this there is plenty of italian, mexican, ugandan and french dishes). Breakfast is quite poor and the whole hotel probably needs a renewal, but is a calm and quiet place where to stay.

Restaurants, oprivate gardens, swimming pool... Great views over the the hills of Kampala but a bit away from the city center (5000 shillings in taxi).

EDEN ROCK RESORT: RELAXING AND PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Eden Rock Resort is placed just a few kilometers from Jinja and next to Bujagalli Falls (where the White Nile rafting takes place). Run by a very friendly women from Cyprus (relative of the might and forgotten Demis Roussos) it has 8 simple but clean bandas with bath facilities inside placed ina anice garden just behing the main building. In August 2003, one week prior to our arrival, this place had the joy to host prince William of England! Best of all was at night, staying under the light of candles in the dinning room with Maria and her sons and having nice and long chats!

Very nicely built small hotel with excellent views of the falls.

MWEYA LODGE: IN THE HEART OF THE PARK
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Luxurious hotel (under the Ugandan standards) with accurate and excessive service and all best of all, confortable rooms (even with conditioned air!) placed in the heart of Queen Elisabeth National park and with killer views from the rooms and specially the pool. It's worth to spend what a night cost even if you do a tents/camps trip as its locationa deserves the price of the room!

Excellent views over the Kazinga channel, view the elephants drinking from the river while you are swimming! Conditioned air, buffet type restaurant, various bars, shop, swimming pool, laundry service (cheap and fast)...

Mango Grove: A taste of home
  • Satisfaction:
  • This used to be called the Blue Mango. I felt I had to mention this place because initially it was a really good place to stay. Comfy beds, good prices, a swimming pool and close to the cities attractions. However, after a day or so there the staffs true colours started shinning through. They didn't really like having us backpackers around as we didn't spend the type of money they liked. Also we saw a few signs up which insinuated that the staff were perhaps rasist in the kind of ex-pat way we had expirenced before. A good place if you were holidaying, but buget travellers and backpackers would do well to give this place a miss. After all, we're in the country for a whole other type of expirence!

After months away from home it was nice to have Walkers crisps, Cadburys and baileys again. However, the imported prices were very steep!
A lovely pool though, and accomodation for familys or dorms for travellers.

    Blue Mango Lodge: Backpacker's Accomodation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The place is very beautiful, has got a huge restaurant area with a great atmosphere and a swimming pool! (I found it quite anonymous, though, as it was so huge, and I was alone...).
Very basic dorm beds (with mosquito netting) for $ 6 a night (maybe a bit overpriced compared to similar accomodations). Cottages seemed quite nice though. Also possibility to put up your tent.

Highly recommended for a dinner or drink, and to stay especially for groups and families!

    Other backpacker's hostels:
    - Red Chilli Hideaway (more recommended for solo travellers)!
    - Backpacker's Hostel (haven't been there)

Speke Camp, Bujagali Falls: Speke Camp, Bujagali Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Camp US$2
    Dorm US$5
    Banda US$15
Food costs about US$2, a beer is about 50 cents. The breakfasts are brilliant with some of the strongest coffee anywhere.

Just the most fantastic location! Right on the banks of the Nile (about 20m away!!). Great bar, food, people. Camping only US$2 a night, double bandas US$15 a night, dorms US$5 a night. Great showers, quiet, secure compound. Pete and Sherry, who manage the place, are a lovely couple and they also have a mental dog who seems to live on top of the bar. Davis and Kibina, the bar guys, are great fun, mad but great fun.The fish they serve was probably caught that morning! The bar is also public for part of the day and evening, so you get to meet loads of locals and other travellers. Try the whitewater rafting too! It is now under new management, but the place has not changed at all. I met the new folk there last year and the place is as great as always.
