City Centre budget accomodation

The first time I arrived in Kampala I stayed at the long running Nakivubo guest house. At that time it was a noisy, grubby guest house but it was well affordable for me and bang in the area I wanted to stay in right in the middle of this ever growing city. The Nakivubo is not the most obvious place to find as you have to walk up a couple of flights of stairs from the dark alley that cuts through from opposite Owino market on Nakivubo Place in the direction of the old taxi park to Nakivubo Green. The new owners have given the place a coat of paint but the place is not the same. The top floor bar used to be a lively place where the nightly meal of fried crocodile with cassava and kachambari was lapped up by the locals. The bar is still there and the pool table is still in place, the slightly tidier rooms are still there and now double the price but the atmosphere like the really nice staff that used to work there has gone completely!

Unique Quality: There are a gaggle of hotels and guest houses in this same block of buildings that houses the Nakivubo all are at the cheap end of the market and probably better value.
