Salem: African style accomodation and conference centre

Highly recommended place to stay. Very friendly people. Staying here supports the orphanage and local health service. Large variety of accomodation from conferences to an individual tourist. Craft shop. Orphanage on site, you can play with kids and talk to nurses - they taught me Lugisu (the local language in Mbale)! It is quite a way out of town though. You can get a 'special hire' all the way or a taxi/'taxi' (minibus) part of the way (500/=), then bicycle boda-boda the rest of the way (200/= or 300/=). Or if you have your own vehicle, from the centre of Mbale head out on Kumi Road. It's a long way, there's a sign by the turning for Salem (the turning's in one of the trading centres along Kumi Road).

The only accomodation in Mbale I know of that raises funds for the community.

Budget Lodge: Best budget accomodation in Mbale

The best budget place to stay I found in Mbale was Budget Lodge, quite far down on Cathedral Avenue. Boda boda riders do not know it, but if you walk along Cathedral Avenue you will find the small entrance, reception is upstairs. Friendly english speaking staff. Basic but clean accomodation. They have mosquito nets in good condition (rare), give you a clean towel and wrapped small bar of soap, a large bed and wooden chair in each room. Some rooms have lovely big balconies overlooking the surrounding streets and town.

The accomodation at Budget Lodge and the more popular Mount Elgon View hotel, is quite similar. But there is a huge price difference: Mount Elgon View charges 15,000, at Budget Lodge you can get rooms for 7,000 (although some rooms are more expensive).
The balconies are also unique. And the excellent condition of the mosquito nets is very impressive for budget accomodation.
