Mountain Huts rwenzoris: Mountain Huts Rwenzori General Tips

The mountain huts in the Rwenzoris are fairly basic but clean.

Relatively speaking they can all get quite cold. I`d recommend a 4 season sleeping bag and make sure you keep it dry.

The porters leave cooking utensils at each hut. You can use these but most people bring there own.

The porters cook on charcoal. You can use this (its part of the package) but most people bring there own fuel stove and cook for themselves.

The toilets are typical of mountain hut accomodation bring your own toilet roll. They are clean but basic.

Apart from the Elena Hut all huts have a fairly reliable water supply.

All huts, in different ways, have great views.

Most huts could easily get quite cramped. As with most mountain hut accomodation you`ll need to bring a degree of tolerance and humour.

Most huts have areas nearby to camp. Although very few camp in this area.

Guy Yeoman Hut: Hut 5 on the Rwenzori Circuit - Guy Yeoman Hut

Along with John Matte Hut this is the most modern of the huts.

There is plenty of room (even sperate rooms). Probably about 20 people could stay here.

The water supply is fairly reliable and close by.

Toilets are typical for mountain huts.

Porters and guide have there own hut and sleeping porters.

Great views of the Mjuku Valley.

Amazing plant life.

Physically you are likely to be exhausted when you get here. Some to such an extent that they will want to leave as quickly as possible.

Kitandara Hut: Hut 4 on the Rwenzori Circuit - Kitandara Hut

You are likely to be joined by large, bold, rats at this hut.

These ruin an excellent hut in a fantastic location.

There is room for about 15 people at this hut.

The water supply is nearby. There is plenty of room to cook.

Great views with outstanding birdlife.

Frequent encounters with large rats.

Elena Hut: High Altitude hut Rwenzori Mountains - Elena Hut

This hut is used to climb Mount Stanley. Its high (over 4300 metres), cramped and cold.

There is allegedly room for 12 people. But its cramped.

The water supply are nearby pools. Treat this water and/or boil it.

The toilet is interestingly situated. An evening visit will require a lively rock scramble over iced rocks.

Elena Hut is outstandingly situated but it is a "wild, wild place".

Situated on steep rock at the foot of the glacier you have excellent views of Mount Baker and the main Stanley glacier.

Its high, cold and cramped. Dont expect to get any sleep. Its a great experience.

Bjuku Hut: Third Hut on the Rwenzori Circuit - Bjuku Hut

Good clean mountain hut accomodation.

This hut has room for about 15 people.

The water supply is nearby and fairly reliable (although I treated).

The toilets are better than the other huts.

There is room to cook.

This hut is used as a base to climb Mount Speke (4889 metres).

The hut is fairly high, and exposed, so could get cold.

Monitor youself and your colleagues for altitude sickness. If in doubt do not ascend. Trekkers have died by ignoring obvious signs at this point.

The porters have there own huts and cooking areas.

Excellent views towards Mount Baker.

Also, great views down to the Bjuku Lake and Bogs (weather permitting of course.

Bigo Hut: Intermediate Hut - Bigo Hut

Like Nyamileju Hut I didnt stay here.

Again, some guide books recommend that you could use this hut if John Matte Hut or Bjuku Hut are full.

I recommend against this its in a state of disrepair.

the hut is really only suitable for an emergency.

Excellent views over the lower Bigo Bog.

John Matte Hut: Second Hut on Rwenzori Circuit - John Matte Hut

Along with the Guy Yeoman Hut this is the most modern hut on the circuit.

There is more space. I`d say about 20 could be comfortable. And the hut is divided into rooms.

There plenty of room to cook.

Its a bit of a walk to the water supply. This is fairly reliable (although I treated just to be safe).

Toilets are typical mountain hut toilets.

The hut is a lot higher than Nyabitaba Hut. Carefully monitor yourself and your collegues for altitude sickness. If in doubt dont go higher.

The hut is situated amongst the unique flora and fauna of the area.

Given good weather you`ll get views of the snow capped peaks of Stanley.

Njamileju Hut: Nyamileju Hut - Intermediate Hut

I didnt stay here. Some guidebooks suggest that this hut could be used if Nyabitaba Hut or John Matte Hut are full.

I would not recommend this.

The hut is in a complete state of disrepair.

I would suggest it is really only suitable for emergancy scenerios.

Nyabitaba Hut: First Hut on the Rwenzori Circuit - Nyabitaba Hut

This is a clean, basic, mountain hut.

There is room for about 15 people.

There is a seperate hut for cooking. The porters leave pots and pans that you could use - although most bring there own stoves.

The water supply is nearby and fairly reliable (although I`d recommend treating).

The toilet is a typical mountain hut toilet. Those used to this sort of thing will not mind its clean.

Outstanding views, weather permitting of the Portal Peaks.

Great wildlife watching possibilities monkeys and various birdlife.

Interesting rainforest landscape.

Saad Hotel, Kasese

I am afraid I found this hotel overpriced, dusty, and the food very uninspiring. Far better to go for one of the options out of Kasese (Ibanda or the RMS headquarters).

Dusty, and bad food.

The staff are friendly and helpfull.
