The Crow's Nest: Sleeping on the flanks of Mount Elgon
  • Tip Rating:

  • This Kenya - Uganda trip that we had booked was indeed a camping trip.

The travel agency provided new tents that were given to us at the Schiphol airport.

These tents were very decent; it was a Dumbo model, for 3 people. So there was plenty of space in it for two people + luggage.

As we arrived pretty late at the Crow's Nest campground, we had to build up our tents in the dark. And as it was the beginning of our camping tour, that was not so easy. But we helped each other and like this we managed.

This campground was made in terraces, with a splendid view over the falls.

There was a great bar with drinks, there was no fridge, but ok, the beer was not hot (very important).

The great view, a great location to hike

The Crow's Nest: Facilities at The Crow's Nest

  • So this Crow's Nest campground was beautifully located on the flanks of Mount Elgon, and it was built in terraces.

At several places on the campground there were small wooden cabins, which were the toilets. On earlier trips the toilets were just a hole in the ground, but here they had made a kind of wooden box over the hole, like this it was a bit more comfortable. And the toilet cabins were clean and not smelly at all.

At a central place there were a few shower cabins. Next to this cabins there was the so called boiler, a self made water heater which was an old iron barrel filled up with water, and under it they burned wood, maybe a primitive method, but very efficient, the water in the shower was pretty hot.

Camping in Africa is such a wonderful experience.
