The man at reception offered to give us a luxury room for less than the price of a regular room (80 euros), the Dakhla room. Dakhla was the place we had wanted to visit in Western Sahara, but since Royal Air Maroc cancelled our flight - the only other place we had managed to find seats for was laayoune. We considered it a good omen for the days to come.
The luxury room was OK - definitely nothing like a 4 stars hotel luxury room, but it was comfortable and correct... just nothing to write home about. The hotel staff, by contrast, was the most helpful and friendly one.
Other good hotels in town are the Sahara Hotel (3 stars), the Hotel Nagjir City (4 stars) and the Parador Hotel (5 stars). We tried the first wo out the following day, just to find out they were fully booked - not by tourists but by UN peacekeeping forces and their families, who had flown in to join them for New Years. The cheaper hotels did not really look decent or clean, so we ended up not even considering them.
