overlooking the river by sinequanon Situated in the South Luangwa National Park it overlooks a side river which runs into the mighty Zambezi river. This place is DREAMLAND! Monkeys play above your head in the enormous trees, as you sit and watch wild animals pass by at all times, giraffes, elephants, baboons. This is a great place for wildlife lovers. we camped there and it was fantastic to hear the hippos pass by our tent in the middle of the night. Only the very brave dared go out for a pee!!! I dream about getting back there someday and staying in one of those fantastic huts though!!!
This place has both a camping site and exquisite but cheap huts to rent. (check prices and additional info on their website) It is quiet and very beautifully done! Don't miss it!

Absolutely fantastic place! All day and all night view to all the animals on the river bank. Great G&Ts to follow the sunset across the river. And at night you could hear the hippos grazing right outside the tent and the occasional leopard making sounds up in the trees. As Sinoquanon writes there's a campsite, chalets, bar/restaurant, swimming pool (though broken by hippos when we were there :-) ). Go for game drives at night and early, early morning. Our only siting of leopard during our trip in East Africa was in South Luangwa NP. And she even had cubs! Flatdogs Campsite Sunset by Zanzibargirl Flatdogs are also known as crocodiles. But dont worry, there are more hippo than crocs around. Set in the middle of nowhere you would hardly expect to find such an amazing and great place to stay. But I was really impressed. They have Camping available, or you can sleep up a tree under a net for a real African experience, chalets suitable for multishare for backpackers or also suitable for families or couples with kids. The Chalets are amazingly comfortable and very well priced for what they are. At $15 US a night pp. And Camping is even cheaper. It was a great place to stay. Though do be warned for power outage is common. But sometimes it doesnt hurt to have no power and just sit by a campfire and enjoy the wilderness of Africa at sunset does it?
They have a pool and bar for everyone to commune at, the reception is very helpful, and guards that walk you to and from different areas of the site at night. As being on the edge of the National Park, you of course have to be careful as animals do venture on to the site. This is a high level lodge, around US$ 250 per night, but spotless: friendly service, good food, superb bungalow, great view on the plain, best appreciated from the outdoor hot spring tub. Game drives are 2 x 4 hours per day, a bit "hardcore" in my view. Clients are mostly keen photographers, Anglo-Saxons mixed with Germans. They organize a common safari with 2 other lodges, which I describe after.

Next to the well-known South Luangwa National Park, there is a remote, unknown Park called Luambe. It is a 100 kilometers trip from South Luangwa (which, on dirt track, translates to 4 to 5 hours back-breaking trip). From the main road Mfuwe airport to South Luangwa, you can see the roadsign "Wilderness Lodge" (it does not tell you that it is a 4 hours trip though!). The road goes through a few villages, funny to cross, then enters in the Luambe Park. The Park includes many deserted area's, and its share of Tse-Tse flies. Due to previous poaching, elephants are small sized and cats are hiding. But the river is full of hippo's, there are vast plains which are a welcome change from the traditional bush, and we spotted a rare cerval, a few leopards (including one drinking at the small pool of the lodge) and plenty of birds. There is only ONE lodge in the 350 sq km Park, the Wilderness Lodge, which is a good combination between rustic bush camp and good lodge. Tents are nice, with a real shower (not bucket), and you sleep in the middle of the hippo's. The couple of German Managers is friendly and well-organized, and you have a total sense of exclusivity all by yourself in that vast, deserted reserve.

This is the Bush Camp of the luxury Kafunta Lodge, 2 and half hours by 4x4 on (very) dark tracks. Located next to the river with many hippo's, in complete communion with nature: no electricity. Bungalows are quite confortable, with their bucket showers, however relatively small if you are with 2 people. Staff is usual Zambian style: worth every compliment, and cooks are making miracles preparing good food in such primitive kitchen. 2 words of warning for such bush camp in Zambia: - Tse tse flies: many of them - they don't transmit diseases, but are a nuisance; - Afternoon heat: no place to hide for a good nap. So this is for relatively hardcore safari explorers, and there aren't many cats around. However, the isolated location, the typical African atmosphere, and the abundance of other game are worth the detour.
