Travel Tips for Bulawayo

Take the long walk to the Matobo cave paintings.

by K.Knight

The Matobo hills is one of the richest areas in the world for prehistoric rock art and this form of recorded history is dated from about 25'000 years before the present.
This rocky area has numerous of these graphic art forms but unfortunately these paintings are subject to vandalism and this is destroying them faster than weather elements. These paintings are exceptional records of how prehistoric men lived in this region, how they hunted and what animals were present, and also gives us the opportunity to glimpse into how they perceived the world around them.

The return walk took around 2 hours from the car park.

Bulawayo is a good place to find accomodation and resupply your food stuffs. The city has some colonial charm and a really nice museum of natural history and a nice art musuem where you can find nice batiks for sale.

I don't know the present situation of Bulawayo. I was secure and safe when I was there but I can't say about now.

City

I stayed in Bulawayo for just an afternoon and evening. Its a big city but nothing much to do. I walked around town for abit. In the evening, went for a great all you can eat buffet at the Rainbow hotel which was real posh! Stayed at Bulawayo caravan site just out of town, very basic but it done the job!
