The hotel is too far out of town to walk. With the serious shortage of fuel for taxis, you won't find many. This is a top quality hotel with great views. Don't leave your door or window open as a monkey can show up and destroy the place in a minute! (We watched one do that in the next room) There is a golf course and a couple of tennis courts. Neither is well maintained and they get very little use. For breakfast, there were about 20 staff in the restaurant and only 4 guests. Due to the economic and political problems, the occupancy rate runs from 10-30% so don't be scared from their very high advertised rates. Room rates are negotiable if you get the right person!! Very nice rooms!
Unique Quality: Great views towards the river and you can see some wildlife on the well maintained grounds.

This huge hotel has got what it takes when one thinks about guest relations. In all our travels, never before had we encountered such pleasant and friendly staff - from the cleaners to the management, everyone made it their duty to ensure that our stay was a memorable one. The hotel boasts a wonderful 18 hole golf course with crocodiles as one of the hazards! We spent a few hours viewing the wildlife that roam freely on the course. For families with small children this is the place to stay.
Unique Quality: As mentioned earlier, they have a great golf course, beautiful swimming pools and quiet surroundings.

Miniature falls in the lobby.....
The most modern hotel in town... It´s huge!!!!!! They even have a little Fall inside the lobby and an included casino ...... It´s not very beautiful though...... Golf course etc is included, well I could live without it.... While I have been there there was a warning notice, that lions have been sighted near the golf course, so it turned out an adventure trip to play....... hahaha!
Unique Quality: It´s posh!!!!!!

Good value for money accommodation are Safari Lodge and Lokutula Lodge. More luxurious is the Elephant Hills Hotel. I can still remember the Victoria Falls Hotel colonial styling when we stay there in 1971. It is within walking distance from the Falls and one can see the gorge from the hotel. A Boma dinner is recommended, also the nightlit waterhole. It is not uncommon to see elephant on your doorstep, wharthogs on the lawn.

A cheap(ish) option for South African's is to hop over to Zim for a few days and enjoy a beautiful place who's currency is weaker than ours :)
We went for four days, stayed at the Elephant Hills hotel, and did all the really cool tourist-type stuff ... sunset cruises on the Zambezi (every night!), white water rafting, hiking thru the falls.
Incredibly beautiful place ... just gotta get rid of those mosquitos!

child safety

I will shortly be visiting Vitoria Falls and Harare with my husband and 2 year old son and am slightly concerned about the health and safety of my son. I would love to hear from fellow travellers who have been to these areas and how they got on with looking after their children. We will be travelling in April, can anyone recommend any travel tips to make the holiday a memorable but safe experience for my son. thank you

We took our two-year-old son to Harare and Victoria Falls - but it was before the present problems affecting the country. At that time we were able to walk around central Harare in perfect safety. We even went into a park where he played with some of the local children.
In a sense, Victoria Falls is a much "safer" place, since it is obviously a much-needed source of foreign currency for Zimbabwe, and the authorities try to ensure that visitors' stays are trouble-free.
The only "problem" with travelling with a toddler is trying to get him to take his anti-malarial medication. We mixed it with yoghurt, but developing taste buds can detect anything unusual! We stayed in air-conditioned hotels in both locations, and in fact were little troubled by flying nightlife.

P.S. Although you can't really go on safari with a two-year-old, we did take an afternoon tour from Victoria Falls. We saw a lot more than I expected, and our two-year-old gawped at hippos, giraffes, elephants and even a lioness which we spotted in a dry riverbed.

Thank you for your reply, I will certainly try the yogurt tip. We are staying with friends in Harare and The Elephant Hills Hotel at Victoria Falls, were our friends are to be married. Where did you stay? How did your son enjoy the food? Hope we are as lucky as you with the sights on safari.
