Shoestring Backpackers Lodge

The pros... Shoestring Backpackers Lodge has all-in-one place. Campground, bar, restaurant and a swimmingpool. They offer dorms, small rooms and family rooms. The prices range from 5 USD a night for camping, to 50 USD a night for a family room. I stayed here 3 days, and enjoyed the stay. It's a party atmosphere in the bar. Laundry can be done for a cheap price by some locals who apparently stays in the campground.

The cons... The rooms are basic, and maybe not too clean either. No mosquito net in the room I stayed in. The prices could have been cheaper due to that. The swimmingpool was dirty. The price for a beer is 2 USD, which is twice the price compared to the local bars. The baboon restaurant had a bit too high prices to be inside a backpacker campground.

Unique Quality: Shoestring Backpackers is a hippie-style guesthouse. The bar rocks the nights in Victoria Falls. It's the most popular place for young tourists, backpackers and overland trucks. A british woman is the owner of the place, and she also work in the reception and bar.

The lodge has two large "Grand Danois" dogs. They were lazy and afraid of the cat!

Shoestring Budget but great for what you pay for!

A Hostel, a campground and a bar. What more can you ask for. I stayed here a couple of nights in the backpackers before my travel friend arrived and I moved to a more up-class hotel. But this place was great. Lots of overland trucks in town, party atmosphere, some interesting deep and meaningful midnight conversations with a bartender and a couple of patrons in the middle of the night. A pool in which lots of drunken overlanders got thrown into and dowsed. Great for the backpacker or overland adventurer.

Unique Quality: Bar, Pool, close to town. Just everything a backpacker or camper or overlander needs really.

Backpackers

by kentishgirl about Shoestring's

We cheaply crammed in on the small grass area where you can camp because it was loads cheaper and the rooms were too expensive for our budget.

This was always busy and a real party place.
The bar area was comfortable and cosy, the staff were friendly and the food was good.

Showers were clean and spacious.

The walk into town is a short one. This place has a brilliant location.

Spray Far Away

by Zanzibargirl about Sprayview Hotel

Quite Comfy the Sprayview Hotel is a nice enough place to stay. I had it prebooked, hence staying here. Next time I probably would stick to where I stayed the first couple of days at the Shoestring Backpackers. But neverthe less, it was really nice. Comfy, good facilities and service. Pool, restaurant. Despite the name, I doubt rarely you can see the spray of the falls, though you can hear it. You can walk to Victoria Falls from here, though there is closer. Nice enough....

Fun

I stayed at 2 different accomodations :
Tokkies Lodge - really someones house with rooms out the back, run by a nice lady called Sue. Dorms are 3 bed dorms, cost around $8/nt. You can self cater in the kitchen and laze around in the lounge, she also sells beer! Its about a 20 minute walk from town, get a cab at night.

Shoestring Backpackers - a great hostel, used by some of the overland trucks, either camping or dorm rooms. Rooms are $6 for a bed, camping £2. Dorms have 4 beds, are clean. The hostel has a tv lounge, a pool and a great bar which is often packed. Its only a 5 min walk to town too.

Ferries between african countries

by kladdet

Me and a mate are driving to Cape Town (from Stockholm) in a year or two, and we're wondering how easy it is to get a ferry, that will carry our jeep and ourselves, between some African countries.
First of all we're taking the ferry from Spain to Morocco, as we're both keen on exploring countries such as Morocco, Alger and Tunisia. To get to Egypt from Tunisia, though, we would have to cross Libya (which we can't, since we're not allowed to bring our own vehicle into the country. This is something we heard somewhere.), Niger and/or Chad.
So our first question is this one: How easy would you think it is to find a ferry to take us and our car from Tunis to Alexandria or Cairo.
Then, later on, as we get further south, we will want to get our car over to Madagascar. We've read in "Lonely Planet: Africa on a Shoestring" that we would have to take a ferry from Mombassa to the Comoros and then another one to the northern tip of Madagascar, and that's it. No other routes. Is this true? That's our second question.
Also, does anyone have a price estimate on the ferry fares?
