When making plans and reservations, ask to be accomodated in hotels in a walking distance from the town center . Most of the hotels are kind of out of the shopping area (wich was this case in Paro) wich makes harder in case you want to give a stroll by yourself.
Stay only in Paro not Thimpu, its more quaint and has much more charachter. Uma Paro is fantastic, stunnning view from the corner suite of the hills around. Def do a stonebath therapy, make sure the water is hot in advance though. Fred the hotel Lab is adorable, hates excersing but loves to be tickled and can lie on his back all day. The staff are friendly, speak fluent English. Food at the hotel is superb as well. Must do the fireplace in the evening, it was wonderful under the stars. Flies are an issue so be prepared for the pestering. The hotel offers some packed lunch options which we thought were a bit expensive per head. Nicer to eat the local food at the market. They recommend 2 restaurants which are really good. Beware of the slippery floor surfaces in the rooms we were holding the furniture and walking! Free internet access which is great the speed is good as well.

The hotel was built in 1974 and has two sorts of rooms, small dark rooms in the main building which are probably quite noisy when the hotel is full or two bedroom cottages in the grounds. These are probably the best option as you get quite good views though you do have further to walk for the dining room and the walk is very cold in the winter! The rooms are a decent size and have ok heating and slightly old bathrooms. Beware the hot water comes out boiling hot so don't scald yourself! The main downside is the beds which are very very hard so be prepared for sleepless nights or bring an air mattress with you. My room had a mouse in it too which kept me awake as it chewed the carpet all night and made scratching noises. The room also has large satellite tvs with a few English language channels. The light isn't too good in the room so you might want to bring a torch to read by.
The hotel has very very slow internet connections. The food is buffet style and quite tasty. The hotel is situated on the side of the hill about 2 kms outside the main town. If you can afford it treat yourself and stay at the Uma Hotel in Paro - you'll be much more comfortable. i wish I had!
Ok views but not of the dzong.
The hotel is based on the shady side of the valley and is very gloomy and dark. The rooms have wooden walls and floors and a wood burning stove. It's very cold there in the winter especially as the stove runs out of fuel during the night! The bathrooms are very basic with a tiny sink, and a "wet room" style shower. There is no bathtub. There are frequent power cuts. There is NO TV or internet.
Nice views of the valley but you cannot see Jakar Dzong from the hotel and it is about 2 kms outside the town.
The Zangthopelri hotel is situated just outside Punaka on the side of the hill with good views of the valley. Most of the rooms are based in two bedroom cottages. They have wooden walls and floors and windows on 2 sides giving good views of the valley. The bathrooms are basic and the beds quite hard. You get small satellite tvs with a few English language channels. There is also a swimming pool.
The food is buffet style and the staff haven't got the knack of keeping the heaters working under the dishes of food so the food is cold or tepid. Unlike the other hotels in Bhutan where they will serve you what you want for breakfast (eg fried or boiled eggs etc) the breakfasts in this hotel is buffet style so there is no choice.
Good views.
Hotel Riverview is on the other side of the river in Thimpu so if you would like to be able to shop and sightsee on foot from your hotel do not choose this hotel. It is quiet however and has a good view of the capital. The rooms are pretty basic, the carpets stained, the beds very hard and the hotel has a problem with the hot water system so you have to run the hot water taps for around one hour in order to get hot water.
The satellite TV is good with many English language channels and the food in the restaurant is nice.
It has a business centre with slow internet connections.

the TV is ok, dont expect to get many channels (besides in other cheap hotels don't expect to get a TV)
you need to order the food that you will eat for breakfast one day before so that they can buy the ingredients to cook the next morning.
This is the only hotel that first accepted a credit card (of course besides the only 4 star hotel - riverview) currently they were building other hotels, so now more perhaps will accept credit cards.
they could cater your needs if you clearly state what you will want.
the whole country is new to the service industry so you need to let them know what you would like beforehand. onces they understand your needs you will be served like a king/queen
We didn't worry about the accomdation at all. We were brought to the one of the best hotels in the towns wherever we went. And we did enjoy the unique styles of the hotels we stayed.
Life in Bhutan is truly simple. For example, writing a letter to the first hotel we stayed only requires 4 words, wherever you send it from the world:

There are several hotels in Thimphu. If you want a not so expensive place to stay try Hotel Kelwang in centre of town. We had a great time there. THE PHOTO:
