Home Sweet Home in Brunei
by freddie18
I am going to share with you on how houses in Brunei looks like. The traditional houses are the Longhouse, Boat House, and the Farm House. Almost all of them are made of palm leaves and wood.
The house I posted here is the one which is a bit modern and quite big and spacious. It is complete with big kitchen, receiving room, and a couple of bedrooms. You will see that it has only the top floor. There is no first floor but rather posts that hold the upper floor and have exposed and enclosed stairs. The exposed stairs goes straight to the kitchen and the enclosed one goes to the receiving room. Downstairs parked the cars under the house. It is generally comfortable and the breeze is fresh. I miss the excellent atmosphere in Brunei. I especially like this house where I stayed as it is away from other houses and typically Brunei and is very different from the rest of the globe.
Islamic Bank of Brunei
by freddie18
This is how IBB looks outside when I first visited one on my first trip to Brunei. It is widely known as Islamic Bank of Brunei. This is one of the three Islamic banking institutions in the Sultanate. Banks in Brunei are open on weekdays from 9AM to 4PM. On Saturdays, most of them are open from 9AM till 11AM only.
If you want to contact IBB in particular, the address is Jalan Pemancha, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei with contact telephone at +673 223 5686 It does have an impact on my trip as I have to visit this bank for exchange purposes.
Pork in a Muslim country & other dining tips
by DSwede
Brunei is a Muslim country. However, there is a large population of non-Muslims, prominently of Chinese or Indian decent.
Muslims do not eat pork, nor drink alcohol. Brunei has made a loop-hole for the former of these, but has instituted a 'dry' country policy against alcohol.
Restaurants that serve pork dishes must publicly display the fact as to caution Muslims about dining there. One such sign is shown here, but many alternatives exist. If you are meeting people, it would be courteous to choose a restaurant keeping this in mind.
If you are content to eat fish, chicken, beef or vegetarian, you can go anywhere. If you are searching for a bit of pork, you will most probably have to go to a Chinese style restaurant.
On the unlikely chance that the servers don't speak English, here are some helpful words while dining:
chicken - ayam
beef - daging
seafood - makanan laut
vegetable - sayur-sayuran
rice - nasi
how much? - Berapa?
where is the toilet? - di mana tandas?
Cover Up
by Kindberg37
I would recommend wearing something with at least short sleeves and longer shorts or pants. When swimming wear a t-shirt & shorts instead of a small bathing suit. As a fairly strict Muslim country, it's always better to be more covered up.
Brunei River (Sungai Brunei)
by victorwkf
Like many other cities around the world, Bandar Seri Begawan is situated next to a river called the Brunei River (Sungai Brunei in Malay) which is the life line of the city. Even till today, there are about 30 water villages on this river (which make up the famous Kampong Ayer) and speedboats and other boats still move along the river almost every minute. This river is also a vital link to the Temburong area of Brunei (east of the city), which is cut off from the rest of the country by land so travelling there is only possible by boats leaving from Bandar Seri Begawan. A trip to Bandar Seri Begawan will not be complete without taking a boat ride on the Brunei River and exploring Kampong Ayer (see my Kampong Ayer tips and photos).
