hotel close to airport for stop-over
by kiwi-b
Hello.
We are stopping over for 10 hrs or so and really hope to get a kip in. We need a hotel by the airport that does day rates. After hours of web-surfing I can't find anything all that suitable.
Can anyone point us to a hotel to meet these needs?
Thanks!

Orchid Garden is located between the international airport and the government offices. They have free airport transfers.
Are you on a through ticket on Royal Brunei? Many airlines give free accomodation in connection with long stop-overs (more than 8 hours). Try and inquire from Royal Brunei whether they also do.

That's helpful - thanks!
Yes it's a through ticket with Royal Brunei. I've been very unimpressed with this airline so far - and haven't even taken the flight yet!

day use rates are not normally posted and are usually half the full day rates. best to contact the hotels directly, most are within 10-15 mins drive from airport. also check on www.bruneiair.com under golden touch holidays for hotel info etc.
royal brunei airlines and the tourism dept also offers free city tours from the airport. as for the airline, the ceo is an englishman, ray sayer, with 40yrs airlines and airport experience, and the airport manager is posted from lhr! so you can expect better service and better responses to your queries etc.
Travel Tips for Bandar Seri Begawan
Popular trips out of Bandar Seri Begawan
by victorwkf
Besides the city of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei offers other attractions all over the country as well. Below are some of the popular trips out of Bandar Seri Begawan:
- Ulu Temburong National Park (consists of tropical rainforest and rivers, need at least one day to get there and special pass required. Best to join a tour from a local travel agency).
- Muara (there is a nice beach and a port at this place).
- Jerudong (please see my VT Jerudong page. This place is famous for its beach, Jerudong Park Playground and the Empire Hotel & Country Club).
- Tutong (there is a nice beach here)
- Seria (this is the area in Brunei where most of the oil is found, both in-land and off the coast. There are local day trips to this place).
- Kuala Belait and Miri (Kuala Belait is a town at the border between the state of Sarawak in Malaysia and Brunei. Once across the border, Miri is the nearest and biggest town. A lot of Brunei people go to Miri regularly for shopping, entertainment etc).
FUEL
by balhannah
A good way to see the sights is to hire a car, WITH the added plus.......
fuel is very cheap here compared to other countries.
But beware, because recently, they have made fuel dearer for foreigners than locals, it still is reasonable though!
Islam
by frankcanfly
The usual Islamic rules apply.... just use common sense.
Take off your shoes when entering a Mosque
Women should keep shoulders covered
Do not walk in front of someone praying to the Koran
Be respectful
Handshakes for men only
by SangAji
customary for men to shake hands ... with men only ...
a nod would do to acknowledge a woman's presence ... touching of hands will nullify 'wudhu' for women and vice-versa
wudhu = 'cleansing' of prescribed parts of body for prayers ... a must for muslims before touching quran and daily prayers
My Personal Opinion (May Differ From Others)
by mizzzthanggg
It's quite a well-known fact that amongst the South East Asian nations, there are those Bruneians of the opinion that only the Singaporeans are worthy to be associated with, being the richest and most developed state in the region, and not their other poorer neighbours who aren't seen as fit to shine their shoes (okay.. my opinion here may be harsh and biased but it really does seem that way sometimes!). Indeed, the Bruneian and Singaporean currencies are of equal value and valid forms of payment in either country.
It's strange because if you think about it, it's true that Bruneians have nothing really to wish for at the moment as they don't pay taxes, everything is free - education, medical, etc - paid for by their sultan (oh, and a young person up till the age of 18 can travel at a child's rate in Brunei!) but other than oil, they don't really have much else in the country and even then the oil is running out fast so what will they do in the future? So you have these sides of Brunei that's opulent and lavish and extravagant, the palaces, the 7-star hotel, the theme park built by the Sultan of Brunei as a present to his people for his birthday, the exclusive and posh Polo Club and Golf Club.. and then you have the shabbier downtrodden sides to it visible in some parts in and on the outskirts of the town.
