Hotel Garden: Comfortable in KK
The Hotel Garden is a fairly new hotel in Kota Kinabalu which may be why it isn't in the guide books yet. Although it is a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of the markets it is very close to he Jesselton Point where you can get boats to the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman park.
The hotel was very comfortable but it could have been a little bit cleaner. The bathroom was fantastic though and the most efficient wet room I have ever used. We didn't have a TV in the room but some rooms do and there is internet access in the lobby.

Hotel London: Somewhere comfortable in the heart of Sandakan
The Hotel London does not look like much from the outside and is very simple on the inside but it is clean, comfortable and very reasonable. We had a triple room which had plenty of room between the beds and a spacious bathroom. The room also had a TV and there is internet access in the hotel lobby.
Breakfast is a simple affair taken on the roof terrace which is lovely. You get a very quaint packed breakfast of bread, fruit and a chocolate bar with tea and coffee available. I can highly recommend a banana and marmalade double decker sandwich!
The main thing going for this hotel though is the manager. While the cynic in me says that he is just out to make his commission, at the same time he couldn't do enough for us while we were there. While the trips they were advertising were similar to things we had already done he was more than happy to arrange a trip to Labak Bay for us, as well as answering our questions on other places. He was so keen to help that he actually seemed a bit put out that we had gone all the way to the tourist information to get bus times!
The one warning I would give would be bring ear plugs. The hotel is situated right next door to one of the towns mosques so you may well be disturbed by the call to prayer. Other than that an excellent place to stay.

Grace Hotel: A bit of luxury in Lahad Datu
The Grace Hotel is more expensive than you're average Bornean hotel but after a week spent in the rainforest it was worth it for us.
We only stayed 1 night here but the room was fantastic. It was a twin room with more than enough room for the 3rd bed we needed, TV and a sitting area with coffee table and fridge. The bathroom was far bigger than anyone would ever need.
Breakfast is included and was served in the restaurant upstairs which is also where we had dinner when we arrived. THe food was lovely and as it was a buffet you could eat as much as you liked.
The hotel is located in the same building as a small shopping centre so if you need to pick up a few bits it is perfect. There is also an internet cafe at the centre.
The only thing that was slightly surprising was that there was no hot water while we were there, although this may have been more to do with the time of day we were showering. If you can cope with this though, and it may well be something you have to cope with in Sabah, then I would highly recommend this hotel.

Le Meridien: KK's nicest, newest hotel
The hotel is quite new and in a teriffic location, near the waterfront and across from the market. The rooms facing the harbor were teriffic and the Club floor lounge was as nice as any I've been in.

Promenade Hotel: Watch the sun set over the South China Sea
Our suite at the Promenade Hotel in Kota Kinabalu had large windows overlooking the sea.
What a fitting climax to our trip around Borneo. We could sit in our living room and watch the beautiful sun sets over the South China Sea. The problem was it made it very hard for us to leave.
We had enough room to stay for a month. There was a large sitting room with couch, chair, TV sitting on fully stocked bar, writing desk with chair and lamp. A large bedroom with king bed, TV, dressers, and large closet in hallway to attached bathroom. The bathroom had a large tub and a separate shower. Large windows in living room and bedroom provided us with amazing views.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
This hotel was a very pleasant surprise for us. The food was outstanding. The staff very helpful. There was a nice pool and a gift shop that sold the best local chocolate candy.
It was also within walking distance of a mall and several other restaurants.

Miri Marriott Resort & Spa (former RIHGA Royal ): Miri for R&R
Miri is the starting point for adventure so we decided to have a couple of relaxing days on the beach before we flew to Mulu. The Miri Marriott Resort & Spa (former RIHGA Royal Hotel Miri), is set on 20 acres of beautiful gardens near Miri's Brighton Beach , fringed by the South China Sea. The view of the pool and sea from the glassed windows in the hotel are breathtaking. Our cottage overlooked the well kept gardens. Service was outstanding and the food was all good.
We had a large room with king size bed, tropical printed bedspread, writing desk with chair, small lounge, and TV.
The attached bathroom with tub was very nicely decorated We also had a balcony with a small table and chairs overlooking the beautifully manicured gardens.

Sepilok Jungle Resort: Stay in the rainforest
We flew from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan on Malaysian Airlines. It was a very short flight. After we arrived at the Sandakan airport we were met by someone from the resort and taken on the 30 minute drive to the jungle.
We stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Resort which is just a short walk from the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation center. We had come to see the orangutans.
The setting on the river was very pretty. There were many trees and flowers surrounding the resort. The humidity was quite high and we had rain off and on.
Our room was nice with double bed, dressers, TV, chairs, and attached bathroom with shower.
There was a balcony over looking the garden.

Gayana Island Eco Resort: Treat yourself to overwater cottages
Gayana Island Resort is located just off the Western shores of the 3rd largest island in the world, Borneo. It is one of the islands of the national marine park of Tunku Abdul Rahman.
The resort buildings are all connected by a wooden walkway on stilts. You don't even have to get wet to look at all the beautiful fish.
If you want to get away from it all this is the place. You can be back in Kota Kinabalu in about 15 minutes. There is a free ferry for guests from the pier.
Nice over water bungalows with queen size beds, couch, writing desk with chair, TV, attached bathroom, and balcony on stilts over water.
There is a ocean water pool, trails in the forest, and watersports.
I would highly recommend staying here for a few nights.

Royal Mulu Resort: Deep in the jungle
Royal Mulu Resort is by itself a luxurious resort set in the heart of the Sarawak jungle. The resort is situated on the Melinau River, adjacent to the Mulu National Park, home to the world famous Mulu Caves. The range of mountains forms a spectacular backdrop to the resort.
The resort has added a touch of luxury to the jungle, designed in the style of ethnic longhouses linked by a series of wooden walkways. The resort is constructed on stilts three metres off the ground with the Melinau River and its' tributary wrapped around it like a moat.
We had a very nicely decorated room, queen size bed, TV, dresser, chairs, and attached bathroom. There was a front and back balcony.
This resort is in the rain forest and it will rain most every day. Some times it is just an afternoon shower and some times it rains all day and night.
The resort swimming pool and built-in jacuzzi are welcome features after a day of caving.

Santunong Kuching Resort: A fishing village
The fishing village of Santubong is worth a visit.
There are some nice beaches here, ancient rock carvings, and birds.
Santubong Kuching Resort sprawls over 25 acres amidst lush jungles, approximately 25 km from the city of Kuching in Sarawak and 40 minutes from the airport. It is a retreat amidst nature nestled at the foot of the legendary Mount Santubong on Damai Beach, overlooking the South China Sea.
