Bagan Hotel: The place to stay

Stayed for five days. Upgraded to junior suite, which does not face the river. Only the very top rooms face the river, so just stick with the junior suite. The difference b/w the standard room and the junior suite was very significant. Lots of space. Very rustic set up, with a very friendly staff. Spend the extra $20 a night and upgrade to the junior suite.

Breakfast on the lawn fronting the river is very nice. Interesting to watch your eggs being cooked over charcoal. Actually, everything is cooked over charcoal, which leaves a haze over the entire Bagan plain. Forget the "fireshow" at night, which was about as corny as I can imagine, but did result in some nice photos.

We absolutely loved the hotel.

Like a Temple Stay

One of the first hotels built in old Bagan, and built in the style of the ancient surroundings, so it actually "fits in". It has been the site of a number of films, due to the old world style and lush setting. The hotel is divided into a series of single story buildings, which house 10 rooms - and are connected by roughly paved paths, and lovely landscaped gardens.

The rooms are relatively dated now, but still comfortable and cool, set in a seemingly natural setting . There are more expensive suites which front onto the Ayeyarwady River. Breakfast is included in the rate, and the restaurant is al fresco with views of the river.

There is also a swimming pool, which can be a drawcard for some. We found the restaurant staff to be quite unhelpful, except at breakfast time. So, chose to eat elsewhere for most of our stay.

Unique Quality: It blends into the historical setting in which it has been built.

A little bit of luxury

The hotel is located in Old Bagan with Gawdawpalin Temple next door and the river on the other side. The hotel consists of a series of one storey buildings made of dark teak wood connected by brick pathways.

Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to suites to river suites. We were given a junior suite which was very nice. The bathroom was quite large and what was also interesting was a cake of Thanaka was available for our use-a nice touch.
The staff are very friendly -on one day they put flowers on our bed.

We liked the location as it seemed to be close to good restaurants and we could walk if we wanted to nearby pagodas/temples.

Traditional Burmese breakfast is served outside on the lawn facing the river.

Unique Quality: Each room has bath/shower, airconditioning, satellite TV, private butler service in some rooms and babysitting available.

The hotel is located right on the river. There is even a small temple in the hotel grounds. Horse carts, bike hire are located right outside the hotel.

The hotel has a traditional lobby area, cafe, bar and pool. You can have dinner in the hotel with a traditional dance concert.

Recently an internet service for sending and receiving emails was set up in a private computer area.

Hotel in Old City Facing Ayeyarwaddy River

There are a lot of inexpensive guest houses outside the old Bagan in Nyaung-U Village. However, we decided to stay closer to the old "city" (actually abandoned wild land with only hundreds and thousands of stupas without any inhabitants except "expensive" hotels).

There are about 4 high class hotels in the old Bagan. They are nicely built houses, no high buildings. After visiting all by a wagon, we took "Bagan Hotel". US$30/night made the value worth.

I know some would say "don't go to those government owned hotels" as the money goes to the government... Well the experience was marvelous, the service was great... I was just buying what I paid for...

Unique Quality: All furniture made of teak wood.
fantastic view of Aye Yarwaddy River.
Tranquil.
Outdoor swimming pool is very relaxing after a long hot riding day. When you go swimming at night, you still see the dark shaddows of stupas against the beautiful starry sky.
