 | Mandalay Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 22 | | We moved to this hotel for our second night in Mandalay, and were very happy with all aspects of the hotel. The counter service was excellent, restaurant clean and a great buffet dinner range available. The room was spacious, with a wonderful view of Mandalay Hill, and was located opposite Mandalay Palace precinct. A very generous buffet breakfast was included in the price.

This hotel was recommended by another traveller - who proceeded to rip us off after suggesting that we "share" a taxi with him from the airport. We did not realise that we would be paying for his much longer trip. Did not bode well for a good start at the hotel! The location of this hotel is in Chinatown, and its therefore in a reasonable location for getting around on foot. The room was quite comfortable and roomy, albeit relatively basic. The bathroom was big, and had both bathtub and shower - NO toilet paper. Also have to add that the shower was completely cold, and there was virtually NO water pressure. Breakfast was included in the $25 price, but it was a fairly sad little affair! An oily egg, cold toast and jam and a three-in-one powder coffee mix. Hotel is also located close to the railways station - and the trains were quite loud, sufficient to wake me several times during the night. The hotel had a lift, but you were forced to use the stairs when the power was off, which occurred twice during the 18 hours we were there. The Royal is deservedly the most popular guesthouse in Mandalay and very often full, so make a reservation or arrive early. The rooms (different categories from 6-15$, double) are all pleasant and modern, the staff are efficient and the whole place is so clean, you could eat from the floor. Highly recommended!! 03/2003 Leave a Comment Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 25th StreetPhone: 22905

Probably because of it's good write up in the Lonely Planet guidebook, this place is very popular amongst backpackers, and deservedly so. When a small group of us were deposited at the quay from the Bagan boat, virtually everyone seemed to be heading there and, indeed, a small but friendly race developed between the trishaw drivers taking us. On arrival, the place was almost full, and they were only able to offer me a fan single with shared facilities. This wasn't a problem. I'm not a fan orf air-con (it gives me a bad throat) and the shared toilets and shower room were kept spotless. The room was small and basic but clean and perfectly adequate. Another advantage of the fan room is that when one of the frequent power cuts kicks in, the fans keep running whilst the air-con is switched off. At 3 USD per night, it wasn't hard on the wallet either. There is a pleasant communal seating area on the ground floor with a few seats outside and a shady roof garden which is relaxing to sit in with a beer in the evening. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about transportation, things to do etc., and it is a good place to hook up with other travellers if you want to share taxis etc. If you know you're going to be here, I would book in advance, especially if there are a group of you.
Nothing unique, really, but a good budget option. We stayed here just because it was in the Lonely Planet guide and I didn't want to waste time looking around for someplace to stay as we had just come off an 18 hour bus ride. I don't remember the exact price of this place but it was something like US$7 for the 2 of us and it included breakfast.
The view from the roof is ok. Nothing to spectacular but I guess if there wasn't a haze we should have been able to see Mandalay Hill but we couldn't see it. I liked it as it was fairly near to the Mandalay Fort. The Sedona Hotel is a 4-5 star hotel. I must admit it was a welcome respite after some very solid day's touring. One day we even used the very nice pool! Another day when we came in very late we had the buffet dinner which was excellent value (US$12.00). Even if you don't stay at the hotel I would recommend going to the hotel and partaking of the international buffet. They even had glasses of French red wine for US$6.00- not bad!
One of the few hotels in Myanamar that accepts credit card! I have mentioned some of the other aspects of the hotel already. It also has a bar area where you can play pool and a shop which sells various souvenirs/jewellery (and you can use the credit card provided it is more than $300.00). The hotel also has internet facilities. When we were there you could send an email from the hotel and receive emails addressed to the hotel for free. It has a pool, gym, massage facilities. Rooms are large air conditioned and have satellite TV! It is also very close (walking distance) to the Green Elephant and the Mandalay Marionettes show.

On returning to Mandalay for one night before travelling on to Inle, I arrived quite late at night from the train and thought that the excellent Royal Guesthouse would be full (see seperate tip) so I gave this place a try. I'd seen it before and it was fairly central. The foyer area is cool and pleasant and the reception staff all speak good English. I was given single occupancy of a double room on the fifth floor (with a fairly boring view!) and it was spotlessly clean, with en-suite bathroom, satellite TV and minibar. It was great for the night, and after a long day on the road (train, technically), certainly gave me a good nights rest. My only slight quibble is that it was 18 USD for the night. This isn't a lot by European standards, but it proved to be one of the more expensive place I stayed. One thing to beware of. If you are watching the satellite channels, you are entirely at the whim of the staff downstairs - you watch what they want to watch! This is also a decent place to change money. The photo shows the nice air-con bar / restuarant that seemed never to have any patrons - no idea why. The hotel entrance it is a bit oppresive , because you get to it through the shops and stalls of the market and besides as the energy is ration it is very probably that you must go up the four floors. Once there , the rooms are O.K. and the treat is excelent Breakfast is good , spetially a kind of fish soup Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: In front of Zeigyo market
