Room with an Awesome View

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 13, 2007

We moved to this hotel for our second night in Mandalay, and were very happy with all aspects of the hotel. The counter service was excellent, restaurant clean and a great buffet dinner range available. The room was spacious, with a wonderful view of Mandalay Hill, and was located opposite Mandalay Palace precinct. A very generous buffet breakfast was included in the price.

Unique Quality: This hotel is NOT government owned for those who prefer to avoid these.

Directions: Opposite Mandalay Palace

The Sedona Hotel is a 4-5 star hotel. I must admit it was a welcome respite after some very solid day's touring. One day we even used the very nice pool! Another day when we came in very late we had the buffet dinner which was excellent value (US$12.00). Even if you don't stay at the hotel I would recommend going to the hotel and partaking of the international buffet. They even had glasses of French red wine for US$6.00- not bad!

Unique Quality: One of the few hotels in Myanamar that accepts credit card! I have mentioned some of the other aspects of the hotel already. It also has a bar area where you can play pool and a shop which sells various souvenirs/jewellery (and you can use the credit card provided it is more than $300.00). The hotel also has internet facilities. When we were there you could send an email from the hotel and receive emails addressed to the hotel for free.
It has a pool, gym, massage facilities. Rooms are large air conditioned and have satellite TV!

It is also very close (walking distance) to the Green Elephant and the Mandalay Marionettes show.

The Sedona Hotel is a 5-star Singaporean-owned hotel in Mandalay. It is within walking distance to many restaurants and shops, although the main part of the city is a 5 minute taxi ride away.

At the time I was there (January 2005), it was the only place in the whole city that accepted credit cards. If you are running short on cash, it's a good option. With no access to ATMs, what you bring into Myanmar is pretty much it so it was nice to be able use the plastic instead.

The hotel is fairly pricey for Myanmar at $102. We paid $90 per night by offering to stay two nights. One tricky thing about using you credit card is that they charge you in US Dollars and then convert it to Singapore Dollars. Your credit company will then convert it to your home currency. So expect about $10-$15 in fees on top of the room rate.

Unique Quality: The best thing about the hotel was the fact they accepted credit cards.

Second best was their breakfast buffet (where I recuperated much of the room tariff each morning).

Directions: Across the road from the perimeter of the Myanansankyaw Golden Palace, near the independence monument.
