Train Travel

Hello there,

I would like to travel by train from Dhaka (Bangladesh) to Mandalay. Also by train from Mandalay to Chiang Mai (Thailand) is this possible? Iwould be grateful for any advice or information. Thank You.

Hello!

It was also my dream to go overland to Burma.
But there is no possibility from India and from Thailand told me my travelagent and also my travelling book.

In Chiang Mai you can buy a Visit-Visa for some hours, but not to stay longer.

You can only go to Burma by plane....
There are flights from Bangkok to Burma... its very cheap!

hi there, sure there is no train running, but sometimes there is a chance to go overland by bus. But only in the north. And... sometimes the borders are also closed. Also: It wont keep You from flying: the street from Kengtung to Taunggyi is closed for tourists, so You have to fly from Tachileik or Kengtung to Heho or Mandalay.

have fun

Travel Tips for Mandalay

Monjas - Nuns

by elpariente

Aunque no muchas tambien se ven monjas en Myanmar.
Se cortan el pelo y visten tunicas de color de rosa .
Hacen funciones similares a los monjes aunque socialmente no estan tan respetadas como ellos

Though not many you may see nuns in Myanmar
They cut their hair and dress with pink colour robes
They have similar functions as the monks though socially they are not so respected

More of the area near the Eastern Gate

by herzog63

There was something about the buildings near the eastern gate that attracted me to them. They weren't cleaned up to be tourist attractions! We didn't go inside them but just walked around in the dry grass watching the lizards scurry away every 5 or 6 steps we would take.

Sunrise at Mandalay Fort

by herzog63

The south-west corner of the Mandalay Fort is a great place to take in the sunrise. Too bad those ugly power wires have to be in the picture but it was such a great morning anyways. Also there are thousands of locusts(i think) rising up off the water of the moat! They are pretty cool to watch! I had seen the same phenomona at Ankgor Wat last year in Cambodia. I don't have pictures of either event though.

Wood carving

by Hewer

I visited a large souvenir shop on the northern edge of town and I was able to see the craftsmen working on their designs. They work pretty fast! More interesting than wandering around the shop and being followed by sales people, that's for sure.

This was on the corner of 27th and 72nd street in Mandalay.

Field Mice - Fried Chicken lookalike!

by thedouglas

These little delectables were for sale alongside the Taungthaman Lake, which is crossed by U Bien's Bridge. We came across a few little food stalls - and were given a discrete head shake by our guide, and told that they were field mice! Pass!
