Flashlight ??? for what I wondered.... This mystery was soon solved as upon utilizing the key to access the room, I found the room to be dark and unresponsive to all light switches...
So anyway, I thought, probably just doing some maintenance on the power system or something.... Opening the window for some light, I noticed a large generator around on the side of the hotel...
Well, as it turned out, city power was only up and running for about an hour each day.... and that generator soon became my best friend.... The hotel would turn it on in the morning for a couple hours so you could have a hot shower, and also a couple hours at night....
I'm not saying this is the only place to stay in town, but just that your comfort level in Kengtung will be enhance if alternate sources of electrical light and power are available at your accomodation....
BTW: The owner staff here are quite friendly and glad to assist with arranging tours, hiring vehicles, or pretty much anything that they can help with... Best option for the price. Generally caters for mass Thai tourists.
$8 double with hot water (good for Burma).
Harry not exactly the friendliest of chaps (he seemed really bored/tired), but has some info (was it all reliable?) March 2007 - Spent 2 nights in Princess Hotel in Kengtung. The staff are very helpful and the accomodations okay, far from 5 star.
There is plenty of hot water but getting it is problematic. The water pressure is so poor you wait all day for a cup full.

Private Hotel is a useful basis for the many village-trekking-tours; it is situated in a quiet avenue , within walking distance of downtown and the only resort style hotel in Kengtung. The resort is designed in traditional South-East Asia style and constructed of local materials such as teak and pine.
Rooms and bathrooms are basic, but clean and not uncomfortable.
The hotel misses a restaurant, although a rather small breakfast room is available, where also cold drinks are sold.
Private Hotel is close to Kengtungs center, the daily bull-market and some monasteries and monk-schools. Convenient for daytours to the various indigenous villages around.
