More about Golden Banana Boutique Hotel

Excelent hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member Gink

The Golden Banana boutique hotel is great! The rooms are really beautifuly furnished with separate living / bed rooms over two floors and the pool / bar area is a tranquil haven after a day exploring the Watts. My only critisism of the hotel is that the rooms are not suitable for the infirm as the stairs are a bit steep!
Location wise you can walk to bar/pub street in about 5 mins and although on first glance the hotel is down a slightly dodgy back road it's fairly busy and we never felt threatened walking down there even late at night. If you're worried just get a cyclo - it cost about 50p ($1) from bar street!

Top place to stay

by TripAdvisor Member 18Herb

Stayed at this delightful hotel for 10 nights from Sept 2nd. Welcoming drink on arrival, clean well appointed room and friendly staff. Temperature hot and himidity high so pool and nearby bar was most welcome. Hotel organised guide andTuk Tuk for Temple visit. Both excellent. Breakfast by the pool was a great start to each day. Easy walk into Siem Reap where there are plenty of eating places ranging from very cheap to expensive.
Hotel advertises as gay friendly but it is friendly for everyone. Will stay here again

Exceeded My Expectations

by TripAdvisor Member tom1941

The Golden Banana was clean, comfortable, safe, friendly and reasonable. I would think if anyone visited the Golden Banana and had problems they were problems they created. The owner was always available on the grounds making sure the guest were being well taken care of. They do sit with you when you arrive and give you a welcoming drink while they register you into the hotel and explain the services that are available. I certainly did not feel pressured to take any tours or pressured to do anything.

This is a Gay friendly hotel and not a ""Gay"" hotel. The guest are about half and half. Regardless of your sexuality the staff treats everyone the same and the guest are expected to do the same.

The care in which the staff and owner treated the guest would be enough for me to return. I spent eight wonderful days there.

We picked the Golden Banana after reading various reviews and contacted the property direct to make our reservation. Despite checking the day before, we arrived with our written confirmation to be told they had no record of our booking. Having sat in the reception area for 10 minutes surrounded by mosquitoes awaiting a landing slot, we were shown to a room on the roof accessed by a ladder.

Tempted as I was by the prospect of breaking my neck on the way to bed, we decided to move on.

Perhaps we have been lucky in the past, but if you don't have rooms available, don't waste people's time confirming reservations. We sloped off to Molly Malone's in town which was fine... see separate review.

Unique Property

by TripAdvisor Member Col1959

The property is on 2 levels with an air conditioned bedroom downstairs and a lounge with a TV (lots of channels in English) upstairs. Both are nicely furnished. However, I was there when it was very humid and I certainly missed having an A.C. in the upstairs section - it can become very uncomfortable without an A.C.

The staff were more than helpful and found me a good guide and driver for the temples. The food was good and the drinks in the bar were reasonable. The location is excellent, allowing you to walk into town to the many restaurants in about 5 minutes. There is a lovely small pool.

I enjoyed talking to the other guests - an interesting mix of tourists, travellers and N.G.O.s. People tend to mix around the pool area.

This is a friendly and unique property. Recommended

Excellent Choice in Siem Reap

by TripAdvisor Member marybanilow

I enjoyed my stay at the Golden Banana. I stayed in the Guesthouse, which is a little more basic than the 'Boutique', but it was great. The staff was always helpful and the management was attentive. My room was spotless. Their tuk-tuk drivers are nice and knowledgable. The shower wasn't the most beautiful, but I guess if you're looking for that, head to the 'Boutique' Banana next door.

Suited us perfectly

by TripAdvisor Member Sam_Swift

We spent a total of 7 nights at the Golden Banana. 3 nights were spent in the B&B and 4 nights in the Boutique Hotel. Our room in the B&B was very clean and in a quiet location. The hotel room was very comfortable, clean and spacious. As "Flash Packers" we travel very light - those traveling with bulk luggage may find the stairs in the boutique hotel a little daunting. The staff at the Golden Banana were the most attentive of any that we encountered during our 4 weeks in Cambodia and would be more than willing to assist an this regard.

Loved it!

by TripAdvisor Member vermillion66

Stayed at the boutique hotel section for 3 nights. Loved it! Quite a charming little oasis in the madness that is Cambodia. The two level rooms are great-except for the mosquitos! Staff sprays every afternoon, but it was a little uncomfortable to deal with. They are like helicopters! The service was above average and they were extremely helpful-booking our licensed quide and our tuk-tuk driver Sarom, for our entire stay. It's a very cozy place with a lovely small pool and bar area. Our entire stay came to about $375 for 3 nights, two dinners, drinks everynight, a guide with driver for 2 days and drinks. A deal by any standard!

Surprise at the end of the path

by TripAdvisor Member Navalator

The place had all the appearance of studied deferred maintenance causing it to resemble a resort that might be described in a W. Somerset Maugham novel. I fully expected to breach upon a dining table by the pool populated by Maugham, Hemingway, John Dos Passos, E. E. Cummings, Frederick Gerald Haxton and other intellectual gay expats chain-dragging on Gauloises, sipping scotch neats and commenting on the bubble butt belonging to Ahmed the pool boy and the bulge in pants of the young Cambodian waiter: A place where Dorothy Parker would love to sit and develop insults of the rich, famous and decadent. The hosts were nonplused, gracious, informative and solicitous: Perfect for the atmosphere of the place. Staff friendly, charming and professional. And, the food was outstanding. There is a house specialty called ”Amok” described as a traditional Khmer dish, Mekong/Tonle Sap River fish fillet wrapped & steamed in banana leaf with Khmer herbs. It comes in a small package but is rich and filling. Be hungry before you order this dish. Another dish to die for is the house Vegetable Soup, a mixture of potato, cabbage, carrot, Chinese cabbage & cauliflower soaking in a broth of secret herbs and spices. You just cannot get enough of this very tasty dish. All the other items we ordered of the menu were first-rate and complimentary to the milieu. The rack rate is within reason and well worth the stay. Access to the venue is through a rather seedy series of paths, prime examples of the neglect of the Cambodian civic infrastructure by the corrupt government, that might startle the unwary traveler but the risk is worth the reward.

Wonderful oasis, great room and service

by TripAdvisor Member mph1

This is a great oasis in a busy city/tourist spot (Angkor Wat)...walking to city center but not noisy, excellent rooms, service and front desk, gay friendly and open to all, exc. bkfst incl., very reasonable price. Best place on our trip.
