Looking to come next week on flight from Bangkok with wife for four days to Phnon Penh could you experienced travellers please advise best hotel to stay in looking to budget around $100 but would pay more if needed. And weather will it be ok to look around for four days - ie. raining just part of the day? and finally is there any day trips that we should not miss

With a budget of $100 you should have plenty of choice. The Bougainvillier Hotel along the river at Sisowath Quay looked nice (although we didn't stay there as we were on a tight budget). Try www.bougainvillierhotel.com.
Weatherwise, I think it is pretty tropical all year round. We were there in March and it was very hot. I think May is even hotter. Rainy season June to October. The sights that you shouldn't miss are Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, Tuol Sleng Museum (S21), the Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda. The Independence Monument is also very impressive. Shame you can't make a detour to Siem Reap & Angkor Wat. Although Phom Pehn is interesting, Angor Wat really is THE must see of Cambodia. Hope you enjoy your trip

Thank you for your email and notes
Sadly, the only cheap flight from bangkok is with air asia and they are
not flying to Siem Reap - would prefer to go there there

Actually you can fly to Siem Reap from Bangkok. I believe the Thai national air carrier has a monopoly on flights from Bangkok to Siem Reap from the next 10 years. You could probably google a search on that.

My buddies and I are actually planning to head to Siem Reap from Phuket (probably by land via Bangkok)next week, then bus (or river boat) it from Siem Reap to Phenom Penh. So there's no need to miss out on Siem Reap if you would prefer it. My understanding is though, it would probably be best if you had the accommodation arranged ahead of time to transport to the hotel. In any case, hope you and the wife have a blast!
