American style accommodations

Rooms were great. Price was $125 a night and was totally worth it. Originally, we had booked a $25 a night place that was very biker friendly and quite a disgusting place and we could not stay there. It was icky. To our surprise, we were soooo happy to get this place. It's American standard but after being on a 5 hour sweaty bus ride- to arrive at our crappy original reservation (and to be able to get out of it)- this was dreamy. See video of arrival if you want to see the outside of the hotel.

Unique Quality: Room service was great and inexpensive, considering. The staff was helpful. The hotel had an ATM machine which were hard to come by.

Phnom Penh's A-hotel

Hotel Cambodiana looks grand from afar. Inside, it looks fabulous as well. Its pastry shop offers the best goodies in town, its nightclub has a live band, its two resto offer fine cuisine, its spa offers excellent services. And the room rate - affordable. I guess what I enjoyed the most is the room itself because it wasn't only spacious, there were bottled water, coffee, tea and creamer, water boiler, bath robe and slippers! O yes, the hotel has a swimming pool overlooking the river. It was so nice to watch the fishermen in the early morning!

Unique Quality: I must say the hotel staffs are professional. The traditional music at the entrance makes you feel very comfortable at once. And, taxis to the airport can be booked without any hassle.

If This Is 4-Star I'm A Banana

It’s big – stretching along the river front and set back from the road in well maintained lawns, the hotel looks very stately and impressive. Sadly, however, the promise of a deluxe room in this supposedly 4-star hotel is far from realised inside.

Things looked promising with a very straightforward check-in, even though the lobby was hectic with tour groups and passers-by. Our room, however, was very disappointing. It was old, dreary, worn – every adjective to describe tired and dull is applicable. The bed was so old that the mattress offered no support at all, the bathroom was just plain bad – the bath stained with years of water dripping, the walls crumbling and peeling.

Wifi is available but you need to buy access via the front desk. I never asked how much it was.

Breakfasts were pretty reasonable – a large, if busy buffet. The negative aspect though, was that they insist on cooking the meats, sausages etc in the same room, thus you emerge from the dining room with a distinct smell of fried food on your clothes.

All in all, a poor 3-star hotel falsely labelling itself as a 4-star.

Unique Quality: Nothing of note stood out whatsoever. Just a dull, dreary hotel that doesn't make the slightest effort.

Mekong-view !

A vast building, the only luxury hotel right on the banks of the Mekong River.Minutes away from most attractions in Phnom Penh. Hotel Cambodiana is suited for leisure or business travellers and offers privacy, relaxation and recreation.Rooms with views of the Royal Palace or the historic Mekong River.

Unique Quality: Good Restaurant, good food and a large pool, immediately neighboring the river.
If you dont mind to stay in such a big hotel, the Cambodiana is the right place for you

More about Hotel Cambodiana

I stayed at the Sofitel Royal...

by Dick_Loudon

I stayed at the Sofitel Royal Cambodiana. Definite 4 star and good service. Close to many attractions in Phnom Penh.
About US$200/night Everything works and service is efficient. Many other places with local character though. Worth checking alternatives.

It's also expensive

Pnom Penh... Five star accomodation... those word's do not really go together. There are some nice hotel's there, but Pnom Penh is still recovering, and even the best hotel's are 3* everywhere else in the world!!! however, when i was there the best hotel's were all around the riverside, mostly the north end near the golden mount, or south by the foreign correspondants club.

The Cambodiana is regarded as one of the 5-star accommodations in Phnom Penh by their own standards. I think rates are around $160++ upwards. You can check it out and all the other 4-5* accommodations like Raffles, Intercontinental etc.

However I suggest the FCC (Foreign Correspondents Club) in PP as the better choice. A friend of mine stayed there and he loved the 'colonial' feel of the place. I believe it is around $60-$80 per night for a room.

Hi guys, thanks for your answers. Funny but I only received notification of a reply just now. Sorry for not getting back earlier, but I thought this post was dead and buried. I'll check everything out.

I am in Phuket right now and connection to the server is a bit dodgy at times, perhaps that's it.
